Stop using my/our tax money to fund these places. So much tax money flows out of the county budget into unregulated "social services" and the result is often the same: corruption. Stop funding these agencies, let them dry up, close down. We are not helping their "clients" with their dependencies. Maybe if they can no longer receive handouts, they'll take care of themselves, oe better yet, leave Broward altogether.

This is an unfortunate incident. Both the Board of Directors and Executive Management totally disregarded their fiduciary responsibilities. Sadly not only the Executive Director should be fired but the entire Board of Directors should resign for allowing this to happen! The same kind of corruption happened last year at ChildNet. It's the kids and families needing help who really lost the most.

and again, the kids are the ones who loose.a day treatment program, a residential program for substance abuse and dual diagnosis for teens in Broward and Dade County. For weeks many parents of former clients have been unable to find other treatment options for their kids. The day treatment program providing high school classes and group and indiviual therapy, as well as family therapy sessions. There is no other place like The Starting Place. Let the criminals who stole from the teens pay for their private treatment, and make the courts force the restitution.
Dont punish the good works of a great organization for being taken advantage of by heartless and greedy criminals.

I worked at The Starting Place from 1992-1996 in the fund-raising dept. I witnessed the good work of the clinical staff in helping families torn apart by substance abuse. The therapists were great - the teachers were great and the kids responded. It pains me to see it go down in flames thanks to people who were supposed to be minding the store. It was NEVER my impression that Roger was a volunteer - He was widely known as Sheldon's right hand man. Not only did he handle finances - he was in charge of HR for non-clinical staff. I hope the investigation looks into Mr. Shaffer's bank accounts because if Roger was taking money - Sheldon knew. You know the saying - "thick as thieves". What a shame!

I worked at TSP from 1991-1996 and I saw the good that we did for the community. We helped adolescents get through some tough times, helped families learn how to talk to each other, and taught the clients how to avoid relapse back to substance abuse. Roger was known as the "comptroller" and came in at a time when Sheldon lost money when he tried to expand the program. Roger was seen as Sheldon's saving grace. I think Sheldon trusted Roger and gave Roger the keys to the kingdom because of this trust. Poor Sheldon? Sheldon should have retired a long time ago, couldn't give up the crown. Roger had nobody watching him because he was appointed to watch everyone else (far cry from a volunteer). This is a sad story about the absolute power of two men and a poor system of checks and balances (pun intended). Suffer, the children.

The CPA audit firm needs to be investigated also. The Board of Directors rely on the CPA audit firm to perform an audit annually. I cannot believe that Generally Accepted Auditing Standards would not identify a fraud of this magnatude over so many years.

A recovery of the lost monies may be possible from the CPA firm and its professional insurance.

that place was a joke. Roaches everywhere, the kids from down the street were allowed to attack the younger kids. I attended in '89.

The starting Placer was started by drug trafficker Sheldon Shaffer. They used to provide Richland County Ohio deputies with 'seminars' which were drinking binges for a corrupt sheriffs department. These fraudulent 'seminars' were then billed to the taxpayers of Richland County. Shaffer should have been put in prison. They were also trafficking amazing amounts of marijuana into Ohio. Avoid this scam 'treatment center.'

they didnt tell you that the staff was fucking the teenage girls in the residental facility. i was there when it was happening.im a former occupant in the dual diagnosis program. the girls were getting fucked
in the residential part. and i was busy deactivating alarms to go steal cough medicine and stealing aerosol cans to get high. the people i came to know very well soon became a new family to me and i miss them alot. when i got discharged to go back home. i downed a fifth of rum in the middle of the night just to go back. its a shame what happened tho. i was 17 then. im 22 now and im sober and doing ok for myself at the moment but there are no promises with that. btw . the people i came to know arent doing too bad either.

Haha, this place was such a joke!
I was a bad teenager and did alot of drugs.
I was prisoned there for over a year!

Id took four drug tests and didn't pass one for weed. Maybe because i was 16 and banging my therapist. She was sorta hot.....in a clinical way lol.

I also just walked out when i started to fill a little too confined. Just jumped the security gate and run across Dixie hwy.

I even brought drugs in there too sell....amazing. Not too the fellow kids. They already knew I was selling too the adults in there.lol
