There is plenty of disgrace to go around. Look at all the bullies on Topix who are teaching their kids to do these awful things to each other.
People are all over the rapists and yet.......if it weren't for all the bullies.....they would be alive today. Parents need to be aware and they can't rely on someone in a school to solve or even monitor it. Most of them are untrained, uninterested and too busy. Parents can't expect drunken teens to look out for other drunken teens. They're drunk and unable to make rationale decisions.
It's really up to the parents to teach their kids about sex, drugs/drinking,manners, kindness, right from wrong but most of all....keeping them away from trouble in the first place because teens are incapable of making adult decisions. Their brains are not fully developed...in particular...a boy's brain. That is why they do so many stupid things.
Rather than bully and blame the offenders, we need to try to figure out why in order to hopefully fix this problem.
If people were to dial into the teen/young adult culture, they would soon realize drugs and alcohol are at the root of the problem. Girls are much more likely to begin having sex at 14 or 15....almost a right of passage for many of them. They may get sloppy drunk and end up having sex when they may not have made that decision had they not been drinking. Some teens have sex with multiple partners and pass out later. Others may pass out, wake up., have sex and pass out again. Many kids have no idea how exposure to alcohol will effect them and they may end up doing and saying things they don't recall the next day. Unfortunately, many kids think this is cool and funny. Social media provides a platform to share, shame, bully, harass and tease anyone a bully desires. We can be appalled and angry all we want but it will not solve the problem.
Now we have cases where other drunken teens raped their 'friends' when they were passed out and passed the pictures around. Horrific to adults but not so unusual to a drunk teen at a party. Parents need to parent and talk to their kids. They need to set a positive example. Society should review the kinds of trash kids are exposed to in the media and reflect upon the impact it may have on them.
If parents really talked to their kids, they would soon realize how difficult it is to be a teen today. Best thing a parent can do is foster their kids' interests/talents and keep them busy. Raising confidence and self esteem along with morality provides a relatively good defense against bullies.
