Students Rally Around Homophobic Principal in Tennessee

There are 433 comments on the www.womanist-musings.com story from Mar 7, 2012, titled Students Rally Around Homophobic Principal in Tennessee. In it, www.womanist-musings.com reports that:

Dorothy Bond was a principal at Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tennessee, who recently received some very strong critique, after she allegedly told students that "if you're gay you're going to hell, and if you're pregnant, you're life is over." She allegedly further went on to threaten gay students who showed any form of affection with expulsion, because they are "not on God's path."

Tony Snipes, a parent of one of the Haywood students alleges that this was not the only incident of intolerance by Bond.

When this incident first occurred, there were parents and students who supported former principal Dorothy Bond. This support recently led to a sit-in, in which 300 students demonstrated their support for Ms. Bond.

The support of the clearly homophobic Bond is disturbing on so many levels. The fact that 300 students decided to demonstrate on her behalf, and a few took this issue to the ACLU, tells me that there is a real problem with homophobia in this community. Nothing Bond said was even remotely acceptable, and the damage was amplified because she chose to make these statements to impressionable youth.

The comments by some of the supportive high school students are very telling - and what they are telling me is that her primitive, backwoods ideology is totally working for her in this school:

"She's just teaching us life. That's how I feel about it and I really agree with her," said Haywood High Senior Errick Wilson.

"She did say something about gays and homos, but she didn't mean to offend anybody. They twisted her words around," Wilson said.

[So, saying something about "homos" is not meant to offend? And it doesn't even matter if it was the principal or just this student saying it. Obviously, her attitude is taking root and growing.]

I am a Christian and personally, I find it very offensive that Ms. Bond criticize anyone. The bible I read tells me that we are to love everyone regardless of race, sex, religion, OR sexuality. The lord loves all of his children. We all have the same blood! No, I am not a Christian terrorist as you put it, not by a long shot, she has just shown, in particularly, Haywood county, how a Christian should not act.

Where's Tennessee? A state in Iran? It should be.
I went there last year for the first time in my life. Not at all impressed.

Coming from a large urban area, known for it's tolerance, sophistication, educated citizenry, multiculturalism and liberalism, it doesn't surprise me that gay people find themselves disabused in the dark and primitive state of Tennessee. I had of course known about the deeply seated Tennessean propensity for sexual abuse of small and midsize farm animals. Unfortunately I must now also equate that state with an equal desire to fornicate with the minds and future of their children.

These people need to accept and respect others. Yes, there are homosexuals and others unlike them interwoven in society. The sooner they realize that and get off their 'better than thou' back woods attitudes, then the sooner we will all be better off. There's lots of people I don't agree with, but I get along civilly and respect others as I would like to be respected. To go as far as assemble to show their ignorance is sickening in this time, especially in this so called 'developed nation'.

The world wouldn't be in such a mess if there were more people like this principal, standing up for what's right.

Well now Ms Bond is teaching her bigot larva quite well I see. Some of this bigot larva will grow up to be the likes of Bond, Santorum, Bachmann and Gingrich. Some will grow up and realize what a sad excuse for a human this woman is and go on to be loving caring people, I just hope its the majority that will be good people.

I certainly agree that Ms Bond is demonstrating how any human should not act. But I have to add that I don't think you are reading all of the bible if this is the message you are getting from whatever selected verses you are reading. That book, that damnable and despicable book, contains and endorses every evil known to man, in spades. Genocide, infanticide, immorality. When your deity commands you to go and kill every man, woman, and child so you can take their land, do you consider that a moral action? When the big heroes in that book have hundreds of wives and concubines, is that a good thing? When your deity commands you to kill your disobedient child, is that moral?
