Christian Father Sues to Keep Kids From Learning About Sex and Sexuality but He's Not a Bigot

Sep 10, 2012 Full story: www.womanist-musings.com 320

Steve Tourloukis, a parent whose kids attend school in the Hamilton-Wentworth area, has asked to be given advanced notice when the teacher plans to teach sex education, so that he may remove his children in order not to conflict with the Greek Orthodox Christian teachings in the home. When the request was denied, he decided to sue.

Okay, I understand that Dr. Tourloukis has religious beliefs; however, schools are public institutions funded by public dollars. I highly suspect that his issue has a lot to do with schools teaching about same sex families and homosexuality. If he really didn't have a problem with the LGBT community, he wouldn't have an issue with his children learning that members of the GLBT community deserve equal treatment in society and should not exist with a stigmatized identity. As it is, the information given in school does not even approach the necessary level to teach children about heterosexism, cissexsm, homophobia and transphobia.

Parents who are not willing to have their children receive a public school education are perfectly free to put their children into private schools of their choice.

I agree. If it's PUBLIC EDUCATION, you can't pick and choose what you want your kid to be taught.

The govt has no business teaching anyones sexuality on children gay or straight. All parents should be consulted otherwise.

Just what the hell is that supposed to mean FaFoxy? Govt, through public schools have no business teaching sexuality to young children. That's what "parents" are for FaFoxy and it is not up to big brother to "assume" parents either aren't teaching children about sexuality or need help in such areas.
Parents have EVERY right to know what is being taught to their children. ESPECIALLY controversial red flag issues and if such issues are near my children they will be out of school tomorrow. It's nice to know people at the adm level FaFoxy.

Tee hee hee, only a dumb homosexual could spell homosexual incorrectly. Or is that there one of those typos? Maybe you should scratch the brown from under your nails a little better. Even better, just use your toothbrush Rufus.

Damn, you're stupid, boy. I spelled it that way so you'd recognize the word. I guess you're even too dumb to figure that out. And the brown's not under my nails, is it? It's on your lips.

Your daddy was right. I should have aborted you. You may have been handy for sex but I'll take good over handy any day.

Most people don't have enough information to accurately teach "sex" or "sexuality" at home, so that would leave a child completely misinformed, at best. If there is scientific information being used to teach the children about these topics in a public school, at least they will get the FACTS right! Whether or not you like or agree with those facts does not make them wrong, and they won't go away. It only makes YOU wrong if you choose to ignore or go against them.

Obviously, you are right that parents have every right to know what is taught to their children. However, too many parents are ignorant of too much knowledge to know whether they are HARMING their kids by NOT teaching them about it.

I have many friends I went to high school with who were taught in school them about condoms and how to avoid getting pregnant or STDs, because they KNEW that the kids were going to have sex at some point. Many of these kids talked about what they learned with their parents, while other did not. Almost all of those friends who talked about what they learned with the parents credit those frank discussions with keeping them from making bad choices. The ones who did not talk with their parents credited the classes with educating them on the things that their parents did not, would not or could not teach them. However, when children are only taught abstinence, or told about sex only from their parents, STD and pregnancy rates skyrocket. Think about that one fact for a bit.

There are many things my parents taught me as a child that I have since learned were just plain WRONG. Do I hate them for it? Of course not! They did the best they could with what they did and did not know. If it were not for the information made available to me through public education, I would have grown up completely misinformed about the world and how it really works.

Most parents are fine as teachers for the basics of teaching children how to function as individuals, but when it comes to the universe and how it works, they need FACTS, not misinformed good intentions.

I might ask the same of one that sees incest to be acceptable as well as consenting intercourse among an adult and a pre-teen.

Not enough institutions or prisons in the years to come and if they don't deal with it soon then I'm afraid this will get out of control. As one MN blogger suggested that target practice would ensue. That most certainly is not what I condone.

Frightening FaFoxy. I can assure you that you have more to fear of the powers that be up top than ANY conservative that disagrees with you on this issue.

The fiscal collapse is near. Why would any sane human being consider printing one more dollar bill in this country and economy is beyond me. This has been a national security crisis here and abroad for a long long time now.
Time for another war or makeshift disaster I suppose. This is getting too easy to watch but many are figuring it all out. They only conspiring going on here is the fed and the tax code.
Zionism, The Illuminati, and other secret societies.

Elmer Fudd is runnin out of dollar bill bullets.
The NWO is a fallacy and tacit admission that we are screwed.

You'll see, you'll all see.

Since the father is a customer/taxpayer of the government school, his demand is not unreasonable.
The school should either change the policy to accommodate parents like him or pay through the nose in legal fees and an equitable settlement.

No need for pity. I am proud of my family and the bloodlines passed unto them. I understand how I got into this world and that any other means is unjust and should remain silent. A veil for homosexuals if you will.

The public school system where this news item originates is in Ontario, Canada -- Hamilton is a city on the shore of Lake Ontario just around the lake from Toronto.(I used to live in Hamilton.)

Public schools in Canada have no problem teaching sex education, including homosexuality. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms has included anti discrimination coverage for LGBT Canadians for years so it's no surprise Canadian sex education covers more than just heterosexuality.

It wouldn't be the first time a left leaning moral web destroyer mislead or lied to someone. We know FULLY what is going on here you don't. So click those heels and make a bigger wish. Or at least try quantum jumping and learn something.
