I am disgusted by "warnings" like this. I mean really infants and toddlers should never be allowed to hold small animals no matter what. but for them to touch a lizard, snake, hamster, guinea pig, rat etc isn't dangerous unless you aren't washing the child's hands afterward. And really ANYONE that handles any of those pets should wash their hands after every single handling anyway. If you wash your hands or even Purell after, handling them is no dangerous. The same for petting zoos. I mean come on.. what are we supposed to do? Not allow our kids to go anywhere or touch anything? If parents need to be taught to wash their or their kids hands afterward, there is a problem with the parents. Lack of education maybe?

Young children are probably more dangerous to most animals. Keep them separated for that reason.

I am with you this is just plain stupid. Guess the Dr never heard of Purell.

I think these "doctors" are clueless. They'd keep kids in a sterile environment with no contact to anything outside that environment. No contact, no immunity later.

My child has grown up on a farm. His Mom loves and keeps exotics from rodents to reptiles. He has slept with a with a dog since birth. He has been allowed to play in the goat field since he was two and no I didn't run around with purell every five seconds. As a result he was able to build antibodies from birth. He is the healthiest child in school. No allergies and he has been on antibiotics once in his life for an ear infection as an infant. I'm guessing the "Dr." who wrote this is a member of one the anti-pet groups radical who is anti-pet period and trying to instill fear in the public their greater gain.

well I own an Green Iguana and when I had my son 5 years ago I was told by my boys doctor to get rid of it.. because of the "skin dust" is very bad for young children. Very concered about this and very upset for my pet that I have had for over 10 years. I took my Iguana to my vet and had a long talk about what the Dr had said. Her reply was that she was raised around reptiles as her family was a reptile breeders and her own children had been around them too as well. As I do keep my pet very clean and well cared for I souldent have a thing to worry about and I still got my big lizard thanx to my vet!!! And my boy just loves him he takes him to show and tell as much as he can:) So the morel of the story is that dont belive everything that you hear about!

the iguana is allowed to roam the house. infant lays on floor and toddler sixteen months likes to grab at it. mother and boyfriend say once he gets scratched or bitten he'll stop chasing it. this seems very dangerous to me. any comments

no doubt, iguanas carry many bacteria on their skin. i know it's either salmonella or e coli. no so bad if the childrens hands are kept clean but if scratched or bitten that would be dangerous for a small child.

This is stupid im inlove with wolves (exotic)and plus ya you can wash your hands after and i was 7 when i went to my first petting zoo. Why would this be so dangerous?I feel kinda stupid saying about with wolves but its true! Some people want to ban wild animals. is that exeptible!? well not for someone who loves wildlife.
