i just got out of building bridges for girls,
they treat you very well up there. there are 3 phases you have to be on for certain privilages. you dont get punished for not eating or not doing things on time. phase- orientation time, 2 weeks; you get a 10 minute phonecall, a ten minute shower and have to wear a uniform thats about it for restrictions. phase 1; 4 weeks, you get a 10 minute phone call TWICE a week, you get a 12 minute shower and you can wear personal clothes. phase 2, 8 weeks; you can go to church (off grounds) can go on feild trips..ect. you get a 15 minute phonecall twice a week. 15 minute showers, its alot better. and phase 3; you can go off grounds, go on home passes for days, go shopping with your case worker ect. but if you do have things in your room such as contraband which would include string, markers, pens, pencils, paperclips, hair straighteners, ect. you can get a "phase drop". thats pretty much the punishment you just get less privelages. my younger brother is at the bootcamp and although they do work you hard it IS a bootcamp so they are supposed to but i know they DO NOT beat kids or degrade them in any way.

My son was in the bootcamp for 2months and didnt get quite as much as you girls do. They had 2minute showers 2 minute bathroom break got to call home once a week for 3mins. and 2hr visit on sundays that took me 3hours to drive to. I saw some of the girls walking the hill one day when we were leaving and they were just walking not doing marching like the boys did. Glad you are out and hopefully doing good. My son is doing good and not getting in trouble....he did great at the bootcamp and seems to have learned his lesson he got honor roll and won the spelling bee and even made rank he was so proud of himself. I wish i could've took him home believe me it was hard to leave him there he was only there for minor incident. He said if you did what you were suppose to do you were fine..he did see kids get assisted but they did stuff they werent suppose to do. Well hope you are doing good now.

From what I've been reading so far, the place really doesn't seem like northwestern at all. I just got released yesterday [3/31] from the v-core program, and I can honestly tell you that it is nothing like what these people make it out to be. Throughout my time there, people were being babied beyond belief. I almost couldn't believe it was a boot camp.
Truthfully, it's the easiest program to complete, and any kids who struggle completing it do so due to their own actions. Most of the problems there arise because people have too much criminal pride and are incapable of doing a simple accountability such as 10 [one-zero] push-ups and keep running their mouth to staff.
I was a Wolverine in Blue Barracks, and truthfully, my stay there was like a vacation. I'm almost upset I had to leave. All the staff there are extremely funny and nice as long as you follow the program criteria [in other words, know your place and don't try to act tough to impress other guys]. In fact, the one thing I absolutely hated in that place, was just how easy they went on all the cadets being disrespectful. If it were up to me, I would have assisted them for calling out, but in my three months I only witnessed about 17 assists [8 of which was one individual, and another 4 was another, but these two had completely disregarded protocol and went about doing what they wanted the whole time there]
The only staff there that was consistently strict was Senior Drill Sergeant [SDS] Swank. But he was strict because it was effective. All the other staff, like Drill Sergeant [DS] Dillman, Kraynak, Runkle, Gorboski, Geiswhite, Geisweit, Winnie, Reed, Staff Sergeant [SSG] Sampson and [SDS] Bressi are all really cool guys, and as long as you maintain throughout your program you should not only have a good time, but also build posiive relationship with really cool people. The case workers Cpt. Noll, Cpt. Hackenberg, and Lt. Stanley are extremely sensitive to people's personal needs and are really nice as well, so long as people just do what is expected of them.
So if your son is complaining about their stay there, don't blame the staff, because they're all extremely cool guys and if your son was following program expectations he'd enjoy it as much as I did.
P.S. the teachers are also really nice and helpful, and are willing to work with students to accommodate their educational needs.
My son had the same experience you did you probley know him but he was in the white barracks so probley not. The sgt. were really nice to him and so were the teachers i met all of them and they were really helpful he got all straight A's and when he was home he got all F's!!!!!! Hope you are doing good!

My grandson just got placed there a few days ago. My daughter called, discovered she can only visit 2 hours on Sundays and receive a 3 minute call on Wednesdays. One of their goals is to promote family communication and how does 8 hours a month establish communication? I understand the concept of instilling rules and regulations, but children still need their family. Some are in that facility for behavior and delinquent juvenile issues. I am connected politically and will not stand for my grandson being abused nor mistreated. So mark my words when I say if this blog is a representation of what is truly happening in this facility...I will go to all and any lengths to make sure they get publicity they do not desire. And a word of wisdom to everyone...if you feel your child is being abused at a facility...don't hesitate to get an attorney and get a court order to have your child removed from the facility. You can also write a letter to the judge addressing your concerns.I think the best thing we can do is find a way to stay in contact with each other and ban together as a whole unit to protect the children if there is abuse there.
Rhonda, thank you for your post. I wish we had you to talk to while my son was at NWA. Unfortunatly, it was founded that the Juvi Judge in our area has realistate in Northumberland county and was getting kick-backs from all the kids he was sending out there. My wadges were attached so i unfortunately had to use a Public Defender, whom also was working for the county, not for us. My son will be off of probation and 18yrs old in October. He brought home very bad language that the kids in my area never used or even ever heard.(nor have i) When he was sent away at 14 years old, he had never left home before. Now thanks to the Del.Co. Juvi Judge, my childs ex-P.O. and the poor excuse of a lawyer, my son was treated like a low-life at NWA.He has learned how to mistreat me,how to be uncaring, thoughtless and sometimes a real brute towards me. I now know whats its like to be restrained. I am in my 50s and not in good physical condition. My son was send there for recieving stolen goods. This was a set-up by his so called friend. My son was returning the discovered I-pod which was planted in his room. My kid never got a trial let alone a fair trial. When he was released he apparently celebrated with MJ. Since the body doesn't perceive this as a poison it is not flushed out of the system. It lingers for up 2 two months in your fat cells. Now with the systems reform of an other-wise good kid, I feel that they are responsible for molding my son into what he has become today. I haven't seen my child for 5 days now. I WILL NOT have him arrested. I hate everyone of you greedy, power hungry scumbags for what you've done to me and my child. I hold all of you and your abusive powers responsible for tearing apart a once good and close-nit family. I wish everyone out there the best of luck. And Rhonda, I certainly hope that you can help to make a change.

My daughter is there at Building Bridges. We just saw her yesterday. In what facility is the person you visited? Northwestern Acad. for Boys or the Boot Camp or Residential for Boys of Building Bridges? I hope and pray that they arent mistreating them as you say.
I was in the secure side and you can trust me this place is not helpful at all. I can honestly say that while I was there I received so much abuse that my temper levels were through the roof. I would have the place shut down if I could. I hope that our judicial system stops sending 'victims' to this tortureous place. It was the second worst place I have ever been. The worst was the evergreen attachment center in evergreen colorado.

I was in the intensive secure side and was assisted by numerous staff for supposed infractions when all I did was follow orders. The staff there assisted numerous individuals for actions that were not even committed by them. Trust me I know I was there and I was 1 of them. I was there during the riot of either 03 or 04, I can't remember exactly which year but it is because of memory loss due to prescribed overmedication with psyche feds. I am worse off for being there.

I agree that SOME of the staff are idiots. But as far as not putting your hands on a student unless he is a threat to himself or others is BS. My son and a few other students were wrongfully restained their at NWA. My son was restrained because he had a court date comming up with a pending release. All he did was ask for an extra milk. As a consequence he was denied release only because the courts say they cannot even consider discharging a kid who was just restrained. Thank fully I was laid off my job of 20yrs. Since I no longer had any wadges for them to attach, my child was releised. Come on, who do you think your kidding by telling us this place is legitimate. I hope all of you corrupt officials burn in hell!

for starters,i have been employed by the academy for almost four years now. while it is true that some of our staff are idiots and some of our supervisors are questionable at times in no regards are students as a whole being abused. yes there may be a staff member who pushes the rules a little but if they push too far they will be disciplined. the only way we are allowed to put our hands on client is if he is representing a fear of or committing harm to himself or someone else. meaning if a kid swings at me he is gonna get restrained. and this will happen via an approved safe crisis management restraint or i will getfired and charged with child abuse! And by the way imho alot of these kids are so disrespectful they need a good ass kickin. it just wont be from me. these kids are treated with dignity and respect wether they treat staff the same or not. see post about staff being beat senseless with his own flashlight by a student.

Oh, and furthermore "jarhead1". You didn't get fired did you. You were placed in another unit away from the boy for 2 weeks. Than DPA said ok, the kids are all liars go back to the way you were. Many staff there could care less about those kids let alone even consider treating them with dignity and respect. The only respect you A-holes have is for your paycheck. Don't even go there mister. If you want to take care of animals than get a job at the pound.

Donna---My son also got thrown up against the wall for asking for an extra milk! The staff member grabbed him by the throat and threw him against the wall so hard his head hit the CONCRETE wall two times. My son was also present there the day the staff threw a young man on the ground so hard they broke his arm. This place is the most horrible, corrupt, disgusting place.
