What Is Pima Cotton?
What exactly is Pima cotton? To the average person, cotton is cotton. It comes from a cotton plant, is ginned, spun and woven into a wide variety of fabrics that we all use on a daily basis. Truly understanding the wide scope of the world of cotton, however, demands an expertise unto itself.
Pima cotton differs most significantly from what may be dubbed as "ordinary" cotton for the purposes of comparison in the length of its staple. Strands of cotton, much like wool or flax, have their lengths measured as staples. Ordinary cotton has staple lengths of just over one inch. Pima cotton, on the other hand has a staple length in excess of the 1 3/8" requirement for being considered an ELS fiber, often reaching lengths greater than 1 9/16".

Long staple length is a great thing, indeed, but what does it mean to the end consumer? For starters, it leads to the highest tensile strength one can find in any cotton product. This high strength can often be up to 50% stronger than most standard forms of cotton. Tensile strength in cotton translates to the quality of being able to be spun in to increasingly finer yards. The end result is a finished product that further accentuates all the qualities one finds in cotton: durability, breatheability, versatility, softness and that unmistakable feel.

Many people are surprised to learn that Pima cotton is hardly a new development. With all of its benefits, it is easy to mistakenly assume that it has only been possible with the aid of recent technologies and spinning equipment. The truth of the matter, however, is that Pima cotton has been available since the early decades of the twentieth century. Originally called "American-Egyptian cotton" upon its development in Southwestern America, Pima cotton has become steadily more available throughout the years and is now grown and processed in areas all over the world, including the United States, Israel, Australia and Peru.
