Twice as many elderly people died in hospice care as in a hospital or nursing home compared with a decade ago, but hospice is often treated as a last resort - and used too late to benefit patients and their families, says a study being released Wednesday.

Maybe there should be a study how beneficial hospice can be to most patients. It can be a place for prevention and not just for the dying.

I thought Hospice was only about keeping the patient comfortable. Will they even perform any preventative procedures?

What people should understand is that hospice care is not just for the patient but as well as for family members. So it's best to take advantage of this as soon as possible in order to help the family accept what's going and help them move one. This is really beneficial and can greatly help in bouncing back after a tragic and painful loss of a loved one. While it's early, resort to hospice care.

I agree with lizzybowen. Though it lets the patient live with dignity and comfort in their last days, I feel it is the patient's decision whether to go for hospice care or not. Luvida Memory Care is also providing hospice care to one of my aunts who is terminally ill.
