Adolescents and Pre-Teens

Community weighs in on Stratford education

Full story: Connecticut Post

The Three R's -- reading, writing and 'rithmatic, are not enough to succeed in today's global marketplace, according to the town's education officials, who created a steering committee a year ago to help craft a five-year strategic plan to improve education for the district's 7,500-plus children.

All the facilitators and specialists won't solve anything if the student is not interested and motivated to learn.

One question was not answered, that is who should pay?

Parents should absorb a larger share of the expense. That will motivate them to make sure their children perform well academically. They feel the effect of direct cost.

That does not mean they should pay the full expense but paying a majority of it is a fair request. taxpayers own the buildings and the 'system'. They should absorb non direct educational expenses.

good lord, people!...wake up!...all this "red flag", politically correct phraseology is what's taken American education from #1 in the world in the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's to below 10th in EVERY major category!...to go along with the three "r's", we need one more, "religion"...add to that only ONE "h", history, and we have a start!...finally, to get back to #1, we need the one crucial element the self-esteem idiots HATE to mention: DISCIPLINE!!!....you can throw all the money you want at "education" (and we have over the last 30 years) and it doesn't mean a thing...it's more than a little odd, but we can chart the GROWTH of the teacher's unions and teachers salaries with the DECLINE of our educational system and nobody wants to talk about the real problem!...the INMATES are running our asylums(schools)..until teachers and administrator's are willing and able to DISCIPLINE children, we'll continue to have more of the same...just my two cents...good luck and God bless!

yes parents should pay more of the burden to educate THEIR children. Its obscene that seniors and people without children are continuously pilfered to subsidize someone else's children. Enough.

So if you receive public education you pay for the rest of your life? An ivy league education costs a fraction of that.

Yes we need to support education; but to a limit. Parents need to shoulder more of the cost if they decide to have children, not foist their responsiblity off on others. If parents want more spending let them pick it up...its for their kids.

I agree! 100%!

I also think we should cut your Social Security and Medicare benefits. Why should working parents contribute to your COLA's and increased medical benefits? You certainly didn't contribute as many real dollars as current workers.

Wake Up and smell the coffee! It's a community we live in and we should all contribute our fair share to make our school system and our community a more valuable and more desirable place to live. If you don't want to contribute to that result then I want my cut of your home's increased value when you sell it because I paid for it.

Its such a shame liberals cannot have a civil debate without name calling and insults. Keep it up...you're making my case.

I'm not the one who got a public education that wants to deny it to others. That would be you.

Social Security should be privatized, let the working individuals take that money and set up a private account in their own name. They would have more money at retirement when compared to the present day Ponzi scheme.

Liberalism is a mental disorder. They cannot function normally. All reasoning is thrown out the window when somebody thats smarter makes more sense.

As for educattion, the three R's are the basics. Todays students cannot master them. When you cannot make change without the aid of the cash register telling you the outcome, well thats failure!

Why should parents pay more? At one time seniors kids went to school, did they pay more? And what about people without kids, at one time their education was also paid for by others without kids. Why should I have to pay to support seniors in their "golden years"? I am in my 40's, will SS even be available for me when I am ready to retire?

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Aries

Don't get embroiled in a bad-tempered skirmish today, for it might turn into more than that if you aren't careful. Everyone seems to be ratty and argumentative, but once you let the first spat take place it's effectively declaring open season. Even though things seem out-of-joint, keep your lines of communication open.
