Chambersburg Area School District security system OK'd for $10,000

"It will cost $9,820 and will equip all three of the district's secondary schools and seven elementary schools with a small message board and warning system that would allow security personnel to send warnings to schools in the case of an emergency."

Ummm...aren't there 13 elementary schools?

Brett Hill sounds great. Every school district should have a Chief of Security.

I was wondering how you identify visitors that enter your school? How would you know if a parent sex offender has entered or any sex offender for that matter?

What a waste of the taxpayers money.
What ever happened to the telephone???????
Guess the next thing the Board of Education will spend taxpayers money on will be to hire several full time personnel to keep an eye on this emergency alert system.
The Board should also buy James Bond wrist watches so the
Administrators, Board Members and school staff can keep a watchful eye on everything that goes on including China.
What in the name of the LORD will these idiots think of next???
What a joke...OH, forgot, its for the children.

Elementary and at least the middle school have their doors locked at all times. In order to enter you have tell the receptionist what you are there for and they walk you to the nurses office or wherever you need to go.

Right, Old Edna who has worked there for 40 years might escort you and don't forget that sign in sheet, maybe they'll even ask for your ID.
The fact of the matter is that secretaries do not always escort parents and visitors throughout the school and can old Edna handle being the sole provider of school security? As far as checking ID and allowing you into a secure(?) building, who REALLY are you?
Schools get an average of 2,000 visitors in the school building per year: plumbers, electricians, out of state assembly groups, grandparents and other family members etc.
Are you really who you say you are? Is your ID real? Are you a convicted felon or a convicted sex offender? Do you have custody rights? Are you on the approved pick up list?

Sure, we all fill out those forms at the beginning of the year but that information needs to be at your fingers tips within seconds and there is a security system that would identify if your license is valid, if you were convicted of any sex offenses or felonies that would deem an escort through out the school ( if you are a parent sex offender you have rights), it would also bring up records to verify if you have custody rights.
This school security system is The School Gate Guardian System. One system would go in each school building and would cost 1,500 and a $500 a year fee which would cover the the background checks. All information is public knowledge through court docs and it taps directly into the National Data base.

- Over 50% of marriages end in divorce.

-More than 350,000 family abductions occur each year, that is nearly 1,000 per day. Mothers flee with children 54% of cases, Fathers in 46%.

-The National Center for Missing Missing and Exploited Children are now put the number of sex offenders in the U.S. at 716,000.

-There are currently 7 million Americans in our justice system today either on probation, parole, or incarcerated.

-Through 2007-08 school year, there were 43 school associated violent deaths among school age kids (5-18) on American campuses.

-During that same time, 85 percent of the campuses reported at least one violent crime, theft, or other crime on campuses.
That amounted to about 2 million crimes.

These numbers are from the recently released Indicators of School Crime and Safety 2009 from the U.S. Department of Justice, which provides most detailed statistical look at crime in the nations schools.

Also, is your school doing back ground checks on school volunteers?

They should be they are regulations of the State Board of Education, the State Department of Health and the Child Protective Services Law.

Volunteers that are reading, tutoring students, chaperoning field trips, helping during recess, or helping during many of the other school activities such as book fairs or special activities should have their back grounds checked before having that one on one access to the children.

Verify what your schools are doing or not doing today.

Maybe I am missing something but I thought that CASD was in the red by 1.5 million. I would like to know where the district is getting all the money to fix holes in CASHS auditoriom for 35,000 and now 10,000 for an emergency system. There is no money for supplies, but there is money for these sorts of things. Every administrator lives on their Blackberry's. I guess none of them are quick enough for Brett Hill. Teacher positions and electives are being cut, but there is money for these "needs". 45,000 is a salary for a teacher. No wonder the board wants to get rid of teachers, they want to spend, spend, spend. I guess we shouldn't be surprised because that is what they have been doing. This school board disgusts me. I can't wait to see them all voted out. Hopefully everyone else is as disgusted as I am and votes to get rid of all of them. We need people who will stand up to Joe, not grant his every wish.

YES - at least CASD and SASD...volunteers must have all 3 background checks plus a TB test.

In order for me to volunteer at my daughters elem school, yes I had to complete a form so they could run a criminal check.I believe they all should whether it's parents or contractors.

Folks please stop whining about your tax dollars. You only gross 21K per year so you're not contributing that much. It's because of your filthy, incorrigible that we need this state of the art security system to begin with. I would go as far as to say that if you stopped spending $3000 a year on cigarettes you would be in better position to contribute more to your school district. Do not get combative with us or your children will face the consequences.
