When one door closes, another one opens is an old saying that, these days, could be applied to some schools in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District.

An entire closed school site, two classrooms, less than 16 students with two teachers and a behavior specialist with aides, occupational therapist, speech and language pathologist, program specialist and school nurse. All this for less than 16 students on a campus that needs to be torn down and turned into ANYTHING else! My kids go to a school with a 30 to 1 student to teaccher ratio while these low performers are treated like royalty. This is why the SCOE needs to disappear. This is why the educational system is broken. Logic would say put all these resources onto one single campus in the county with all of the special eds they can fit in one place, share resources, and co-locate with a "normal" campus that would benefit from the specialty resources that less than 16 students get. Cheaper to give them taxi rides from the four corners of the county (or perhaps their militant parents that demand special treatment for their problem child can get off their tail and drive them) than to have multiple specialty campus' throughout this small county of 420,000 people....

First, you should be thankful that your children don't need these services. You should be thankful that they are in a classroom with thirty other kids that aren't emotionally challenged. The children that need these services can be very disruptive to a regular classroom. As far as the ratio of adults to students in the classroom, all of these employees mentioned aren't in the classroom. The employees are available if needed.

I agree with what a waste of money. The Reporter conveniently failed to tell us how much this program cost and who is paying for it, not to mention the lost opportunity costs of the facilities that are being used. And, it's not just a waste of money for this facility. For example, FSUSD has 14 administrators listed on its website just for special ed.

I wonder how many of those special ed kids are going to be helping us beat the Chinese in the coming economic wars?

Thrashard21 -- I am grateful that disruptive kids aren't in my children's classes... and perhaps all of that staff is not there -- but if they are at multiple sites, then they get paid for travel time and that is wasted when they could walk across the hall to the next class instead of all over the county from Dixon to Vallejo. Cheaper to centralize....

It is quite a commentary on the city itself - the fact that a school the size of Dover Middle School is needed for the degenerates who can't handle regular school.

You people have no idea what amazing educators and special programs it takes for special education services. just because you are blessed with normal children does not mean you are free to judge the lives of others. I bet you think all special children should be sent away huh? But I guarantee all your opinions would change if you had a child with special needs... these are CHILDREN who have no choice in their conditions. I'm pretty sure spending on jails and welfare to crack addicts is a little worse than this... these comments speak more poorly on yourself than they do of the district. Your negligence and prejudice are more detrimental to America then paying for these services is. yuck.

First I want to comment on the fact that these are children you are referring to. I am a parent of a child with autism, and I am not personalizing these comments so I can stay composed as I am writing this. I also am thinking that after reading these comments there are still community members that do not educate themselves or get factual evidence before writing these statements. I can say that the school my son goes to has dedicated staff. I also want to comment that these children do not choose their disabilities. As a matter of fact if you look up trimersol it is a preservative they use on vaccinations, and look up other vaccinations in general the ones you get and it will blow your mind to see the ingredients, however you need patience for research. My point is that this is given to our children in the US, and I believe is one factor linking the cause of autism, ADD and other disorders that have been affecting children. As adults our vaccinations may have given reactions that we are not aware of. So if you care about the future of this country which are the children, THEN BE PART OF THE SOLUTION! GET YOUR YOU NO WHAT OUT OF YOUR YOU KNOW WHAT!
