We are expecting our first baby - a little girl! Just before the tell-all ultrasound, my mother-in-law expressed surprise that we would want to find out the gender and informed my husband that she does not want to know until the birth.

I agree with your husband, Your making a big deal out of nothing. Quite a few people prefer the surprise. She may have other reasons. If you don't feel comfortable asking why. Let it be and enjoy your pregnancy the way you want.
