While the President of Springboro Schools BOE, Kelly Kohls is also the President of the Warren County Tea Party. She is also very close with everyone in the State of Ohio Tea Party political group. She DOES have an agenda other than the Springboro Schools. She is following all of the talking points for the Tea Party agenda and doing her part to infuse them into the PUBLIC schools in Springboro. Non Tea Party people of Springboro “WAKE UP AND SHOW UP to the BOE meetings!!”
“Kohls seems quite happy preaching fiscal responsibility and belt-tightening when teachers and school staff are the ones on the receiving end of the cuts, but she doesn’t seem to quite muster up the same fervor for fiscal control in her personal life.
Kohls blamed her financial woes on the “catastrophic financial events that has (sic) led our country into this recession” and explained that she was unable to find another loan after her home value dropped and her “mortgager went out of business”.
Given the outcome of Kohls’ poor financial decisions, it’s hard to take anything she says about personal responsibility seriously. Still, Kohls continues to travel widely, speaking about her “successes” in starving Springboro schools of funding while putting her conservative, Tea Party stamp on the district.
Kohls and fellow school board members David Petroni and Jim Rigano have refused to put renewal levies on the ballot and they withdrew from the Ohio School Board Association, instead joining the Ohio School Boards Leadership Council, a “conservative alternative” to the OSBA that Kelly helped found.”
I am a long time Springboro resident (moved here at age 13 in 1973) and hate to see the school system being carried into a religious, right wing system. The schools need to prepare our communities kids for the future in math and SCIENCE for them to be able to compete in the world and their future. Back in the day, PARENTS did the preferred religious teachings according to THEIR CHOICE and schools were for the academics. If parents are concerned about their child’s religious/spiritual education, they should be responsible for that. Why should the teachers also be responsible to educate YOUR children on Creationism? The teachers are there to educate the kids in courses to prepare them for college, not the seminary. In college, you are not forced to take classes that include creationism. It is your CHOICE if you want to sign up, AND PAY THE TUITION, for classes concerning religion. In looking over course requirements for degrees such as Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, IT, Physics, I have never seen a mandatory requirement for a Creationism/Religion class.(Unless you are attending a Christian University…but again that is YOUR CHOICE after high school and YOUR dime).

A-Men Boro Alumni.

JW your BOE that you support just promoted Ms. Cook with a 3 year contract and a promotion. It's official the animals finally have the keys to the zoo.
#24822 May 23, 2013
In the name of transparency please provide us with names of the good and outstanding teachers in the district?
#24823 May 23, 2013
LOL..... Boro Alumni
back in the day..... public schools kept their noses out of their students sex life and just left that up to the home and church! Now Taxpayers are expected to foot the bill for public school teachers to "show and tell" all about it!
Sad to say some public teachers have been known to "home school!"
Why should teachers be expected to educate YOUR child on sex education? Isn't that YOUR job?

Their peers would be the best source for that information. Those that teach the next level after someone else can best tell you how well or how poorly prepared students from different teachers come to them.
#24825 May 23, 2013
Actually it was Mr. Petrey who gave the promotion and asked for her services in the central office.
#24826 May 24, 2013
If the teacher representation within last night's board meeting is a balanced cross section of all of Springboro schools, then most certainly this district's student population is direly in need of much more positive teacher role models.
I say let 'em walk!
#24827 May 24, 2013
With the BOE's blessing of course. Nice deflection though. I feel sorry for Mr. Petrey. The BOE is running out of scapegoats....he will probably be next....

Somehow these critics forget that they elected three previous board members and a Springboro Treasurer that had a lot of trouble with their personal finances. Craig Colston, do you know the history there? For years he did not pay his State taxes and the State sued him for a $60,000 recovery, and he lost his home due to foreclosure? Dettwiller had his home in foreclosure 3-4 times while raking in almost $200,000 per year in income- no income losses yet did not pay mortgage? Gentry Ellis declared Bankruptcy after purchasing a $250,000 home and passing off all other debts- including her education debt to all of us. Scott Anderson left his restaurant in bankruptcy a few years ago.
Are you implying that economics only happen to Tea Party people or are you saying that people in public office should never to face economic crisis. They are not protected from real economics like the public sector.

Students went home and told their parents they were made to skip class and go to parts of the HS building and clap for their HS Principal they did not have a choice they were forced. So stopping education to praise a retiree- do they do this for all retirees?
This education system has held up false gods and forced children to praise them.
Maybe this should be the new Controversial Topic. Praising false gods is a sin.
Students were also forced to write letters of appreciation to district employees for appreciation day.
Indoctrination exists inside our schools.
#24830 May 24, 2013
Tell me one kid who would go and tell their parents that?! Those kids love that man. Do you remember the amount of people who came out to support him ?? They were not forced to do anything they didn't want to do. It is pathetic some of the comments on this page, full of lies. I only feel sorry for the children of these ignorant people who post these lies and cruel insults. You are a great role model. Keep it up!!
#24831 May 24, 2013
While it may provide some great joy in recounting the financial falls from grace others have endured, how does this help the 2000 plus kids in our district that are not receiving the education the taxpayers are funding.

Reading my morning copy of the Dayton Daily I note that Mr. Budd missed the point of the policy proposal being discussed regarding controversial issues.
Little did anyone know that the policy dealing with controversial issues that arise in the classroom would itself be controversial.
The main crux of the policy is to require teachers to present both sides of an issue to the students when they arise in the course of normal classroom activities.
The policy in NO way, shape, or form advocates the teaching of creationism any more than it promotes abortion. It simply requires teachers to not advocate one side over the other, but to present both sides of an issue to the children
The list of topics the board feels would benefit from a free and open discourse of ideas from both sides of an issue include:
legalization of drugs
Who but the union and its supporters would have a problem with both sides of an issue being presented for debate and discussion?
As anyone who has lived a longer life, their are seldom issues that present themselves in strictly black and white terms. Life is filled with the grey area which makes it interesting. Teaching our children to begin the process of analyzing and interpreting various points and counterpoints in presentations will make them more confident in their ability to understand life in general.
ONe final side note is the fact Mr. Budd failed to mention the most salient point of the night. The notice given by the Budget and Finance Committee that it would support a renewal levy in November seems to have been lost in the psuedo issue described above.
Too bad, because that was really the big news of the night.

I'm with you to a point, as I find alchemy fascinating and would have loved to explore how to make gold. But then I remember the controversy surrounding the health benefits of cigarettes and DDT and connect those same financiers to the controversies in climate change and labeling it as a "controversial issue."
Do you know how much of our science is based on the theory of evolution? As one parent noted, if you're in any way concerned about our children's test scores, confusing them with pseodo-science is no way to ensure their success.

Mr. Petrey suffers from Tax and Spend Addiction withdrawal
pains; struggling to resist that one more quick fix of easy new levy money. Like all school superintendents, he is indoctrinated by the OSBA philosophy that the BOE should do what he tells them to do, instead of the other way around.
Let's pray for him to stand strong against this beast that seeks to pull all good men back into the collective clutches of status quo "business as usual."
#24835 May 24, 2013
Just because the "psuedo" issue as you describe is no issue for you - it can be for others. You always seem to miss that aspect of things in your arguments. Others may have a different opinion than yours. I know - novel concept.
So you support the big news of the night? That would be big news that you support a levy. Don't you know that even a renewal levy...is taxes?
#24836 May 24, 2013
I hardly think Mr. Petrey deserves a Pity Party.
Mr. Petrey accepted an offer to work in our school district only on his terms of a five year contract at $130,000 yr/salary.
Mr. Petrey knew that Springboro Taxpayers were looking for more than just a "cookie cutter" superintendent to settle into the comforts of an "affluent" community and continue "business as usual." He was well aware of our school district's new philosophy of CHILDREN FIRST and he knew that our school district was not under the indoctrination of the OSBA philosophy of running a continuous stream of school levies to increase union employees pay and benefits.
I think Mr. Petrey weighed all these things in his mind; and wanted the challenge of the high expectation that Springboro taxpayers demand of our school employees. But, can he stand strong against the pull of unnecessary evil force of union
against him? If not, then what's the big deal IF he chooses to find an easier job in another "business as usual" school district?
Springboro Taxpayers are looking for a few good men and women that are good and strong educators who will stand for what is right; instead of falling in line with whatever is "popular."
#24837 May 24, 2013
Don't be silly!
Of course we know that even a renewal levy is enough revenue to provide a quality classroom education for our children, and job security with generous salaries and benefits for our school employees...and NO NEW TAXES.
What's Not To Celebrate?
Why the gloom and doom of the SURE activists?
Why should our successful children first budgeting BOE elected officials be "challenged" by Springboro parent David Bowman to prove his "ignorance" wrong as he demanded in public meeting last night? What's up with that?
And why should Springboro taxpayers be "threatened" by the Springboro United for Responsible Education activists that they will cause much more "division" in our schools and neighborhoods
IF the SEA doesn't get their big money demands met. Where's the responsible education in those threats?
#24838 May 24, 2013
lol....Oh for SURE, Mr. B...
hand over the red ribbon of "biggest bully" to the "queen
of mean" in the board room, Springboro parent, Nimisha Patel.
