Future can be only as healthy as our children -- Health, Florid...

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

On the whole, Florida's children possess average health. Worrisome patterns, however, churn beneath the seemingly benign average, calling for an active review by broad communities and partnerships to make sure ...

You have to start with parents who are educated and healthy themselves who will monitor and guide these kids at home from infancy. When you have fat parents who have abyssmal nutritional and exercise habits you cannot expect to have healthy kids. When I see little waddling piglet so fat their thighs are touching as they walk they generally are with a couple of full grown hogs. A nut seldom rolls far from the tree. Worse, when teachers have tried to send literature home with the kids concerning their weight and lethargic ways, the parents get incensed and complain to the school board "How dare you!". I've advocated for years that report cards include weight and physical educational grades along with suggestions that parents meet with specialists in dieting and nutrition and exercise for their kids sake but the "privacy" and the "freedom" advocates always rise up and start screaming.

I agree with the doctor but I'd go much further. Our future in Florida is as secure as the success rate of the education of our youth. I for one do not look forward to a nursing home staffed by flat-worlders who imagine that Bible-ism can replace medical science, stem cell research, and evolution.

The article fails to convey the true sources of healthy children. It says "Addressing the state of our kids' health is an imperative for all. Our future can be only as healthy as our kids. Quality health care provides them the best chances to become the robust adults who will lead in years to come.

Chartbook culminates two years of study by the Florida Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality, an initiative of the University of South Florida, sponsored by Nemours, All Children's Hospital and the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration"

Quality health care is not what makes kids healthy!!! Quality living is what makes them healthy.

Central Florida has exceptional potential for offering kids quality living--such as lots of space still available for parks and bike trails and cultural venues dispersed throughout the area (not just a high-cost downtown auditorium) and a climate that allows vegetable, fruit and herb production year-round if you know what you're doing.

For healthier kids, change their transportation options, getting them out of cars and school buses and onto bikes and walking; provide numerous neighborhood parks accessible by bike and equipped with tennis courts, playing fields, heated pools, etc.; provide access to wild, natural areas; grade them on physical fitness as part of school grades; require the mastery of sports as part of the school curriculum (emphasis off of star male foootball/basketball players); establish school gardens and create incentives for people to grow their food at home (get rid of current disincentives as a start); teach what physical, emotional and mental health look like and ways to achieve them; quit putting kids in stressful situations that undermine their health as many schools do in the name of "discipline."

Places that do these things have healthier and happier kids. "Health care" does not create health. Drugs do not create health. Lifestyle does.

You must be a very, very unhappy failure of a person to have such an attitude towards people of faith. I'd say anyone so obsessed with such hatreds that it forces them sub consciously to throw out quips against religion in every conceivable post they make virtually, has to be more than slightly unbalanced mentally. Maybe you also need to lay off of the Mexican weed ?

The answer to health and education all around is school vouchers for every child.
Public schools stifle excercise ... and then advocate ritilin to supress excess energy.
The only option today is to allow parents the choice of where to school their children.
Schools hold children's attention 6 to 7 hours a day. This is far more than most parents. To blame parents for the inability to control 6-7-8 year old children, and instill some discipline and respect ... at least while in class ... is 90% the school's fault.

Except for the few who stay fit in hope of landing a basketball or football job in the future, most of simply fat, lazy slobs who want to do nothing except watch TV and play computer games. They will die young. Don't worry though, when the revolution starts there will be lots of fighting and running and killing and not much time for eating. Most will really slim down to the trim they want at that time. Until then, "BELLLLLLLLLCH"

Right On Grandma!! Let's all eat bread, fish, wine, cheese and an occasional lamb slaughtered for sacrifice just like Jesus did. Then, we would all be fit, trim and skinny just like Jesus was. Hallelujah Sister.

I've been on Effexor from http://goo.gl/TRCx1y only one week but am cautiously very optimistic. Prior to this I was on citalopram but still feeling very low and sleeping poorly, feeling like I needed to be in bed 12-16 hours a day. Now I am waking naturally after only 8 hours sleep and finding it much easier to concentrate at work. I can hardly believe it is working so quickly but I feel so much better. I've had no side effects.
