At this point in L.A.'s decline maybe it is more humane to "medicate" citizen children.

How is this even news? that medicine that's designed to help kids focus and succeed is, gasp, helping them focus and succeed.

Oh, stop with the anti-medication baloney. If your kid had type 1 diabetes, would you deny her insulin? There are definitely behavioral things to be done to help ADD/ADHD kids, and medication is certainly not a cure-all. But to deny medication to a child who needs it is just plain cruel. My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 7 years old. He'd gotten sent home many times from kindergarten for disruptive behavior in the classroom, and in first grade he ran away from his teachers to go running up and down staircases. We tried everything imaginable with behavioral changes and finally went with medication, starting with small doses. Everyone hears about Ritalin, but there are other choices, like Metadate, Adderol and Strattera. My son takes Strattera and eats and sleeps well. He's a straight-A high-school senior who channels his energy by helping the other kids in his classes. The meds haven't changed his personality or made him an automaton -- it's more like they've removed all the extra cords from an overloaded electrical outlet. Please don't believe everything you hear about medication for ADD/ADHD. It's not fair to your kids.

problem though is when they are teenage and get off the meds, lots of time they find meth to feel normal again

Manic/Depressive (now called bipolar)behavior was around 40 years ago as was schizophrenia or maybe you don't think there is such a thing as schizophrenia either.
They used to call Alzheimer's and dementia senility. Maybe you don't believe there are these diseases now.

For those of us who have actually experience with ADHD, etc. I can assure you that it is not parenting. PHDs will assure you that it has nothing to do with parenting. Before you decide to comment ACTUALLY know and have experience with the topic you are speaking about.

Yes, but poor parenting still causes homosexuality, autism, schizophrenia, and all childhood cancers doesn't it?

Please excuse me, I'm butting in and answering as another parent. I have three children and have excellent parenting skills. A child with ADD does not respond to the same things other children do, and it takes a good deal of energy to learn to understand them and help them. I am not lazy, I am not a bad parent, I believe in firm guidance, and I'm not a sell-out to video games and other technological distractions. I was a stay-at-home mom for many years and devoted myself to my family. I've found that most people who are against ADD medication just don't know the reality of the disorder; they've been listening to media hype and widespread misinformation. You sound like a smart person, so I recommend "Driven to Distraction" by Dr. Hallowell, who himself has ADD. I was against medication myself until I read this book and then talked to a number of other parents of ADD/ADHD kids. I've researched the theories about diet, dyes in food, behavioral therapy, etc., but none of those things have made the sweeping changes that are often claimed by the supporters. I know kids who've gone to the Drake Institute here in Los Angeles, for example, and have grown up without ADD/ADHD medication, and I haven't seen much progress in managing the disorder that way. The medical journals aren't bursting with success stories from these alternate paths. But I do remember the anguish, the frustration and aggravation my son suffered before he was diagnosed and we tried medication. I must reiterate that medication is NOT a panacea -- parents still have to spend more time and energy with these kids. But please don't discourage parents from using medication. Read Hallowell and then come back and tell us your impressions; I'd be interested in your professional perspective.

""Telling exuberant children that they have attention-deficit/hyperactivit y disorder is like telling women they have a ****-deficit/hypermammary disorder. Differences do not mean disorders. It's alot easier--and cheaper-- to diagnose a kid with ADHD and put him on Ritalin, than it is to create an environment that nutures his unique gifts.""Lara Honos-Webb, PhD
I HIGHLY suggest reading her book, "The Gift of ADHD".

You are so right! When I acted up, a backhand from my dad was the pill I got. Do that now and people call 911! Today's society wants a pill for EVERYTHING. I dont have time to exercise (but I have time to over eat), dont you have a pill to help me lose weight? Medicate today, screw the future.

Oh, Please. I grew up in the 60's and 70's. We had lead paint and asbestos too. If dyes and dirty looks are going to kill you, maybe you should have given up a long time ago? Let your kids eat dirt and chalk and paste! Thats what builds their immune system. Let them be KIDS! Everyone worries about whats slowly killing them. Stop worrying and start living! No one is getting out alive!

Are you for real!!? 40 years ago, kids with ADD were called day dreamers. And those who were ADHD were overactive and regularly sent to the principles office for discipline. Ritalin has been around for over 50 years. You are an uneducated boob who should not be allowed to post when you do not know what yo are talking about.

I am 46 and have been diagnosed with ADD. So does my sixteen year old daughter, my 17 year old nephew, and my brother. I think I am definitely more qualified than you. My daughters grades went from D's to A's. Focus is a wonderful thing. To be able to stay on track is also a wonderful thing. She eats, sleeps, and behaves like any other 16 year old girl. No personality issues with her. And she feels better about herself. so do not tell me that it is bad to medicate, or that it is because of bad parenting. It is enough to know that I was the one who passed it to her. Which was beyond my control. For someone like you to say that it is bad parenting is appalling! mind your own damn business!

YET, YOU managed to survive and reproduce without medication. How is this possible? DETERMINATION! NOT medication.
