How do you know it was planned? Do you have info law enforcement should know, or are you typing out of your ass? From the "facts" I have read from the media, two criminals got killed and an old vet that had Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), performed overkills. I wouldn't call him a murderer, and he should not spend one day in prison or jail. He should be given 3 to 5 years of probation, and banned from MN. I am sure he would like it better in Texas, where he would have never been charged in the first place. What would you have done, if these two broke in your home or trailer? Sounds like you would have got wet and hoped like hell they were planning on sexually abusing you. You remind me of Whoopi Goldberg, is that you Whoopi?

How is it that he set the burglars up? He wasn't waiting in their homes for them. He was sitting quietly in his own residence.

It appears they had his residence noted as an easy mark for a quick payday. It's my opinion that they set HIM up.

In my opinion, the "kids" were wrong and so was Mr. Smith. He went to far........DEFINATELY!........ .but, if they hadn't come back to his house ..........again..........they might be alive today.......committing more crimes. While, I do not agree with the way he did it. He probably saved us taxpayers way more money than this trial is costing us. Those two were headed down the wrong path. Had they survived, we probably would be paying for the boys way in our prison system and the girl and her future babies on the welfare roles. Not many kids committing crimes and on drugs at 16 and 17 (this is not when they started; remember, but when they stopped) turn their lives around and make a good contributing member of society. I feel bad for all the family members involved.

I sure hope that the friends of these two learned something from it.

How do you set someone up to rob you? I'm curious to know. His doors and windows were locked. He was inside, downstairs.

Also, now that the families know that their neighbors have had property destructed and items stolen from them, have they offered to help repair the property or replace the items their children stole?

I agree, instead of hating the old guy, how about a little compassion?

I just watched the Dateline coverage of this story and I cant believe Byron Smith got charged let alone convicted of murder. He is clearly the victim, even his recordings were obviously a man who has been living in fear and trained to react. I would have done the exact same thing. Where were the parents of these out of control malicious teens who clearly weren't taught how to live in society. The blood is on their parents hands. That mom and sister knew that boy was headed for prison. Its a tragedy when anybody dies. But those teens would have been a drain on us anyway.
