Did the teens know they were trespassing?

If they knew they were trespassing they deserved what they got.

Young kids do stupid stuff, these teens were old enough to know better. The homeowner had his property POSTED!

COPs shoot unarmed people all the time on public property and get time off with pay.

The "System" will convict the homeowner of something because he had the gall to defend his property and self.

USA is really phocked up!

Tyrone, your an idiot. Do you really think this has anything to do with police shootings? You think it's ok to defend property by killing someone? Maybe call the police. Maybe they would have come and shot those two for him? Get off the pipe.

The punks got exactly what they deserved. And this poor old guy has been the victim of several burglaries and got fed up with it. I don't blame him in the least. And I wonder if people here in MN would be willing to put together a defense fund for this gentleman.

He could have shot them dead with one shot, he was doing the humane thing by putting them out of their self induced misery.

It's appropriate a male and female were involved and killed in this PC age. Only one gender missing, a Gay.

RIP, lesson learned stay off private property!

P.S. you can't count on law enforcement to defend your property BUT they WILL be there to persecute YOU if YOU defend your property.

I like how they'd have us believe these kids were "role models", yet the girl might have been their to steal an old man's pills to feed her addiction.

If you break into people's homes you might get shot, it's a fact of life.

Sadly, these two idiots found out the hard way.

I'm betting it won't be long before the families try to get some money out of this.

Correct, and they may have been looking for weapons to use in armed robberies, or looking to steal a car to use in a getaway maybe killing innocents.

One thing clearly certian is they were crimminals up to no good and they got what they deserved!

No winners in this case, dead kids, homeowner in jail, COPs didn't do their jobs to protect and serve homeowners.

The Judicial System WILL FIND a scapegoat and it won't be the COPs who failed the homeowner!

Tyrone, do you really think its the cops fault? Where's your sense of rationalization? Two young adults committed a crime. They were probably drug addicts. This doesn't give anyone an open invitation to assassinate them. This is what separates us from the uncivilized. Maybe that's why Minneapolis is so f'd up. Once the threat is gone, you no longer have the right or the reason to defend yourself. He shot them multiple times then put the gun to the girls chin and finished her off. That's murder my friend. You obviously don't have an understanding of the law. It's not a green light to murder. He didn't all 911. He didn't report the previous burglaries. He hid the shootings for a day. Obviously there was no aid, as the police would have given. He spoke callously of how he finished them off. Your nuts if you think this is ok.

COPs should have caught the burgerlers, it now turns out they broke into a different house on the same day of this breakin.

These 2 were a modern day Bonnie and Clyde and ended up with the same disposition: DEAD.

The homeowner is nuts, for anyone to do what he did was either nuts OR simply executing training he received while serving the U.S. Government after being traumatized by numerous breakings AND being faced with 2 crimminals in his house. He knew previous intruders had taken his guns and it was safe to assume these intruders were armed and dangerous.

At some point Mr. Smith snapped and acted irrationally (nuts) killing the 2 intruders and finishing off the female with a bullet to the brain as she gasped for air, hmmmm ya he was snapped out.

In any case the good guy is alive and the bad guys are dead, don't get any better than that!!

Eval Mr. Smith and put him on probation with the understanding the COPs PROTECT HIM and his PROPERTY!!!

COPs arn't paid to simply fill out forms after a crime has been committed.

The bottom line is you break into someones home and you might get shot, although this execution style killing goes much further than self defense. After the girl was shot twice and was laying prostrate on the floor he put the .22 caliber handgun under her chin and basically executed her, she was completely incapacitated before he shot her the last time under the chin sending the bullet into her brain. He also seemed to be divulging information that he must have known would result in his arrest and he described the execution style killings as if he savored every moment.

When you play stupid games (like breaking into homes to steal prescription drugs),
You sometimes win even stupider prizes (like getting shot or even killed).

OK, why were the cops called to his home on "suspicious behavior"? They didnt explain what it was. Did one of the kid's friends know who they planned to rob and when they went missing made a call to the cops? If so, charge that person with being an accomplice.
Maybe Smith killed the girl to put her out of her misery, knowing she wouldnt make it to the hospital.

Apparently they found prescription pills from a previous home robbery in their car.
We dont know what state of mind this homeowner was in when he confronted them. He might have been drunk, or paranoid, or just plain scared of getting in trouble after he shot them. Yes, he should've called 911 immediately upon hearing suspicious noise. But I support his right to shoot at them once they got into the house. I dont think he should've gone overboard though.

I also hope someone is staying in his home now, to make sure these teens friends (who I bet some use drugs) dont try to target a house they know the owner is in jail. Careful, that person might have guns too.

Cops rarely prevent crime, they are usually there to process the scene, fill out the report and sometimes solved it.
Why did the boy transfer schools? Did his family move or was he expelled? Or did he have trouble and needed a new start. Did either have a Juvie record? I feel for these teen's families, they must feel like they failed them somehow.

Wearing a gun is quite legal or any weapon for that matter.

You are right he went overboard for killing them and must be nuts unless he is a trained killer, then acting on his training and is guilty of something.

And you can't assume he knew they were kids, for all he knew they were adults and as far as the crime they commited they were acting as adults.

To bad so sad, no winners in this deal. Stay off private property!!

I agree with you 100%. I was shocked when I heard his description of the "Clean shot" on the girl. He obviously went way beyond self defense.

First of all, it is ridiculous to assume if he had called 911 FIRST that they would have gotten there in time. He should have waited until the first one got all the way down the stairs and taken a better clear shot - ONE TIME. What kind of a drugged up fool goes down the stairs AFTER hearing gunfire in the basement!! He should have waited for the second intruder to come all the way down and again aimed well. Result, two dead intruders, no over kill. You do not get to execute someone who is down and half dead. The only exception I can think of is if the homeowner was also wounded and felt he might pass out, and not want to be finished off by someone merely wounded. Not likely.

That having been said, I can see no reason to hold a cande light vigil for two dead burglers. They deserved to be shot dead, but not in the way this guy did it.

Maybe there were in such pain they begged to be shot dead to end it, like at the end of the movie in "The Fly" where Brundel grabbed the shotgun barrel and pulled it to his head.

The whole thing was set up, he planned on them being there, if you knew the teens or byron yourself you would know this. You dont know either of them, so you have ZERO right to judge, hes a murderer.
