Ten years after its founding, the celebration of abstinence at which fathers pledge to protect their daughters' virginity is seen as both sinister and sensible.

I find it disturbing that Ted Kaczynski has escaped from prison and crashed a father-daughter purity dance.

This is creepy beyond belief. The backfire potential here is enormous. Better to just raise a child in a home where there is an atmosphere of love and trust. I have found that having a safe and secure home is enough to produce a healthy and normal child.

Well miley said that she promised her dad her virginity so you can interpret what that means yourself. Meanwhile the ceremony described in the article where the dad and daughter go down the aisle together sounds way too much like a wedding for my taste.

Would you really want your daughter coming home with that in love look on her face telling you "guess what, daddy and I walked down the aisle together and at the end I gave him my virginity." Creepy.

Actually Father-Daughter balls is what our country needs more of. Our country is falling apart and nobody has morals anymore. It's about time somebody has values.

Creepy. Why?

1. Gives the appearance of a Father-Daughter incest ball...

2. Arguably, the abstinence and virginity pledge is old fashioned and unrealistic.

This in turn means the girls may not be learning about alternatives, safe sex, how to embrace their sexuality, or learn how to maintain a healthy sexual relationship.

3. Pressure is placed on the girls to develop "split-personalities ".

This also in turn can lead to hand jobs, oral sex, anal sex, and/or no condom sex just to give the appearance that they are maintaining their virginity or just maintaining their vaginal virginity.

I have no problem with any kind of sex between people who are old enough to know what they're doing, even if they are closely related.

But warping young girls and chaining them with pledges is different. I think these events only lead to emotional problems later, especially in light of the undeniable statistical evidence that abstinence pledges and abstinence education simply do not work. If nothing else, these pledges offer a powerful means of rebellion when adolescence problems arise.

I have a relative who is far too overprotective of her daughters, and they are headed for disaster, because the real world is a far different world from the world they think they're being introduced to. They are going to be in for quite a shock, and, I believe, unable to handle it.

Finally, I have problems with this the ownership of young girls that seems to be implied here. Given that the age of consent in most states is sixteen, what business does any father have demanding that his daughter must preserve her viriginity once she is legally allowed to give it up? Educate them to be careful and discriminating, by all means, but children learn best when given what they can handle, plus just a little bit more.

No morals? How does having no morals mean having a healthy sexual relationship with the man you are dating?

I didn't lose my virginity until I was 19, but by god if I was "forced" to wait until I was married, I would still be a virgin at 31 years old! The pressure to marry is insane! I'm sorry, but people in their 20s are still growing as individuals, and sex should be a part of that growth. How can you grow with the insane pressure to marry at such a young age?

I like the intent of the purity balls, but my god, to force virginity until marriage is not realistic at all. The purity balls should be geared toward keeping your virginity until you leave your parents house, not until you get married. As it is, it's simply pegging young girls as second class citizens. Boys and young men in this social realm don't have similar pressure, and this is a horrible double standard.

You need to check your facts, I had my name legaly changed...

Also, many people don't know the story about how I got the name Miley. When I was a little girl daddy used to give me a bath and he would play with my private parts and that would make me giggle and laugh, so he nicknamed me smily miley...

You can have morals and not live like it is 1950. it is a different era then it was 50 years ago. The sad part is some of us vote for people Like Palin who is stuck in the 50's and that is why the country is so messed up. We are better giving our children a safe and educated environment to grow up in. Keep them educated about sex and drugs. Raise them with mutual respect and they will be intelligent enough to make decisions on their own.
