I have worked for Job Corps for my past 15 years and have found the people who work at the centers and most students who enroll, are there to make a positive difference in their lives. Sure it takes hard work and a dedication to change, and the staff make the difference because of their dedication to motivate, educate, and enhance young adults to reach their potential. It isn't easy, but when the "light goes on" in a young person's mind, body and soul...it is very rewarding! I have been to many centers, and although they have their nuances, they must all comply with the Department of Labor policies and procedures. That includes ZERO TOLERANCE. One hears more about terrible incidences at college campuses and high schools than Job Corps. Thank God we have a federally funded program that promotes success in our at-risk youth. Obviously the public school system failed these young folks. My final words are... if YOU are a young person, that truly desires to stop wasting time watching Jerry Springer, you feel that school is a waste of your time, so you cut classes; and some of you even have a drug or anger problem, I emplore you to go to your nearest Job Corps recuiter. They are in the phone book, and on the net. Don't waste your life away. There are people who care about you and want you to make a productive and proud life for yourself. You make it or you waste it. It's your call.

I went to Oneonta job corp from 1998-1999. I loved it. I already had my GED and they had a college program with Marist College that i attend and received college credits. I attend the Microcomputer Applications Training program and learned computer skills that i still use today. I graduated from the program in 9 months.
I am current a site manager of a WIA welfare to work program. I over see two welfare (job centers). And i'm from Morrisania Housing Projects in the Bronx, NY . Job Corps have some success stories.

My Niece Attend Woodland Job Corp She's 16. While She Was There She Was Sexually Harassed On Several Occasions By Two Different Boys These Incidents Were Reported But Nothing Has Been Done They Are Still There Walking On Campus.
She Also Got In A Fight With Another Girl. My Niece Is 5ft And Petite, The Girl She Got In A Fight With Is Huge About 5'9 300 Pounds And She Was 20 Years Old. She Choked My Niece, My Niece Is Pregnant. There Was A Staff Member There When The Fight Was Happening She Knew My Niece Was Pregnant And Didnt Break Up The Fight
They Sent My Niece Home And Not The Other Girl. They Both Should Have Been Sent Home From What I Heard The Other Girl wasnt sent Home Because She Graduates From Job Corp In About Two Weeks. When We First Signed Her Up For Job Corp In the Brochure It Said If You Were To Get In Any Fight You Would be Terminated, But If That Was The Case The Other Girl Should have Been sent Home Too Regardless If She Was About To Graduate She's A Big Bully
I've Also been Informed That Just About Everyday The Teenagers Sit Under The Gazebo Near Maple And Oak Dorms And Also By Holly And Smoke Weed And Drink Alcohol. They Are Able To Get The Alcohol In The Weed When They Go On The Rec Trips Or When They Go Home. Ive Also Heard Of Storys Of The Male RA's Having Sexual Relationships With The Students. Where In The Hell Is The Staff When All Of This Is Going Home. In My Personal Opinion Woodland Job Corp Should be shut Down Or They Need To Bring In Another Whole New Group Of Staff

I can only speak on Woodland Job Corps, in Laurel, Maryland, a suburb of Wash. DC. There are many teachers, counselors, resident counselors who came there with a good heart and remain there despite a widespread belief that the mission is being ignored because managment at the top is really only interested in keepng and maintaining their power and the bonuses they get for keeping costs down. We have seen many, many students who leave after 8-11months no more prepared for a job than when they entered.
I do not want to list the outrageous negative things going on at Woodland for fear of being found out and getting fired. Fear is the operative word here. George Bush could get lessons from Woodland management in how to keep people fearful.

Well i graduated from shriver job corps in devens MA. and i cant stress enough IF U STICK TO YOURSELF, DONT GET INVOLVED IN ANY DRAMA, and tho is sounds irrational TRY TO ONLY HAVE A FEW FRIENDS... i find that the ones that are extremely popular and are worried about status are the first ones to go... and as far as the whole drugs and alcohol on campus thing goes... they are about to start random drug tests on everyone on campus regularry. so hopefully that will eliminate the drug problem on campus. another key note to staying out of trouble is simple. BE MATURE! all the he or she said i was fat/ugly or he wants to talk to my girl or the other way around you need to think of gossip as irrelevant. And if this means being what is called in the streets is a "punk" and just not responding to others talkin crap about u than so be it because u respond, u get into a fight, your both kicked out. You ignore it, if it persists you just tell THE RIGHT STAFF MEMBER (unfortunately some staff have favs and will not do anything but give a warnings all day) that person will be removed. Call me a snitch call me what u want but at the end of the day im DEFF not there to impress any of the KIDS there. Im there to get my education and take advantage of the opportunity. Keep your mind on what your there for. Me personally i like body building and the gym is where i spent the majority of my time. Best advise i can give is to jus go there and do you... Now also keep in mind the age group 16-24 that will go there and some kids are fresh out of high school and bring that "OMG" "get ur gossip" attitude with them. They are kids and u have to try to be above that. Some people (like myself the first time i went) have issues with anger and have a very short fuse but generally if u keep to yourself and avoid the types (youll know them when you see them) than you should do fine. And honestly having gone thru job corps helped me to not be so quick to blow up. because i got the mind state of "why do i let someone else control my feelings". ON THE OTHER HAND there are some great staff and friends that you could make there and ultimatly it is almost a requirement that u have a few friends (if not u jus might go crazy heh) but make sure it stays at that. If you have a disagreement with a friend (or staff for that matter) that looks like it could get outta hand, just avoid them and im sure they will do the same.
I plan on going back to job corps in the very near future, and i have my sights set on Oneonta Job Corps. becaus frankly i took the computer tech class and got out and the job placement assistance they give you once you graduate, only jobs they were telling me about were fast food and retail.... nothing to do with my actual skillset. So this time i will be going there to get my electrician and take the overhead line construction trade. because this is a field i have researched and know to be a good paying job. After that I plan to take the ACT (Advanced Career Traing) option they provide so i can go to a major university and get an actual degree not just a certificate.
Dont listen to all the negative people on here because they were the ones who went there with the term "popularity contest" in mind. GO THERE DO YOU AND YOULL DO GREAT!

i went to oneonta job corp from sep 5 2006 to july 20 2008. almost two years. i loved it and i hated it. if you have a positive attitude wherever you go, i see no reason why you shudn't make it there. if ur racist, and have a problem wit city ppl, then it's not for you. i wud suggest you go there and do you. no one's gonna get ur education for you. i left wit two trades, and now im livin in my own place wit my man who went there two. im not sayin every one will end up like me, but w/e attitude you walk in there with will result in how you will walk out. it's a fun and good experience. you'll have problems everywhere. ive been the new kid all my life. ive gone to 10 schools before jobcorp, and i know how hard it is being new. you gotta hope for the best and expect the worst. that's my only advice. hope you go there and have fun and do good. holla.....

...take what was said here... its a school not a jail... if it were jail and 'holdin it down' was a requirement than wed all prob wouldnt have graduated... and as far as "pussy" goes thats the ame they come up with for those who go there with education not rank on their mind. so again i urge you just ignore the rank and popularity contest and youll make it. think about it after school whos gonna care how cool you are... an you can be cool and be a G and fight because someone made fun of your shirt and people will be saying "yeah they was cool, too bad they kicked him/her out"

Hello Daniel I was just thinking about students from Oneonta and decided to see if I have any luck searching for the girls i knew in my dorm. I don't remember alot of the names but your name seems very familiar. Are you African American with full lips and wear glasses? I'm sorry but that's how I remember you last. I attended from June 98 to Nov 98. Do you remember our dorm having conflict with the other girls dorm in the basement? We use to talk to eachother and I was the second Christina the other Christina was there before me and some ppl use to call her "pizza face" because she had alot of acne. Any of this ring a bell? If it does, get back to me ok. I would love to catch up.
