Why is it that teens think it will never happen to them? Stupid death. Who knows what he would have been? My son will NEVER have a motorcycle or ATV as long as he lives under my roof.

i am one of derek and george's freind's i live about 3 blocks from derek's house and in case all of you morons want to know the real story behind this before you make heartless comments about it here it is. Derek bought his own atv and always rode it behind his house racing on streets was rare, george had jus bought his and had not been riding on the street. They were both wearing helmets, They were not racing at the time of the crash george was ahead of derek and the wet road caused him to skid out and hit the sign in which time his helmet flew off and he flew off the quad into a tree breakin 16 out of his 18 ribs, collapsing both lungs and causing severe brain swelling he died but was revived, but it was too late he was brain dead they pulled the plug on him and donated his organs to save other lives. So to all you heartless people now you know the story and we will all miss him and i don't understand why you people have to desecrate his memory you didn't know him what gives you the right

This story is Another reason why Suffolk should designate an area for ATV riders to be able to take their ATV's and have some fun with them.

I agree, put their on lives at risk, not mine on the roadway. If you want to ride your ATV like a jackazz don't do it on the streets. Thanking the rest of you in advance.

I cannot put into words my feelings right now. I am so very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine the pain. I will be attending the wake tomorrow, since I just found out today. My prayers are with you, Duane and your children to get through this with the comfort of loved ones.

"Derek bought his own atv "

I know I am always impressed to hear a teenager has purchased a multi-thousand dollar vehicle with his 'own' money. After school jobs must pay better than a few years ago.

Wrong. ATV's are so destructive to the environment the way they chew up trails. Most kids are just out to do stunts on them. These things aren't designed for that. Besides. Long Island isn't what it was 20 years ago. Everything has been paved over and developed. They shouldn't be selling ATV's in an area where they can't be used.

If the Kid was ao avid and experienced then why did he illegally go out onto a highway to race with his friend? An "experienced" ATVer knows that these things are unsteady at best and definetly not built for racing. Your chances of rolling an ATV and being seriously hurt or killed are about 50% greater than if you were on a Dirt Bike.

ATV's and Rice Bikes should be illegal. Both are nothing but death machines.

This is not the place to voice your personal opinions. This is supposed to be a place for grieving friends and relatives to share their grief.

This is the place to voice your opinion..The obits have a memorial book for the deceased and that is where you voice your sympathies..

Trust me this is the last place you want to say your goodbyes or express what a good kid he was..they will chew you up..no respect in these forums..Some love the thrill coming on here, because they have no lives, and disrespecting the dead, injuried, arrestted etc etc..They get a rise out of it..Since they can't get a sexual rise because nobody wants them hense is why their online all day and night, they love getting a rise this way..

Don't stoop to their level and reply to a comment because then they think they got you and have won

Just do what we do, ride them on the Pine Barrens, just be discrete. The Pine Barrens is mostly Scrub Oak and sand, so you can't really do any environmental damage, you're away from the public so there's no danger or noise. It's a win win win for all concerned.

Nope. That would be a memorial page on facebook or some such.

As has been said over and over, this is a public bulletin board. For a brief while, as long as it lasts, people can write what they truly feel, without social or political constraints on their contributions. It is heady stuff, and ugly sometimes.

I just want to say that I dont think that anyone should be blaming family or friends for the tragic loss of Derek. You have the right to your opinion, but dont you think that his family and George are blaming themselves for what happened. Please have some compassion for all of them. It was an accident. A young life lost, a family never to see or speak to their loved one again. A sister who will never forget what she saw and a friend who will probably never forgive himself.

I also have to add that I think we need to be more concerned over the drunk drivers on the road then the atvs. They are the ones that are putting your life at risk every day.

ATVers are a lot more "in your face" during the daytime than drunk drivers.
