this is nothing new, but still a sleazy way to lose weight. Don't care how long it's been around, or how supposedly toned up you get...it's a stupid and sleazy way to lose weight, as it is as a profession.
Typical red neck uneducated answer.....now here's someone who knows nothinh about the world except what society has installed. There are numerous ways to get your body in shape. We've just happened to take one of the oldest professions, classed it up, completely taken out the "sleazy" aspect of the activity and are now the most popular fitness craze to hit since the simple act of lifting weights. I'd like to see all the out of shape, simple minded people try to lift their own weight. There's always going to be people who can't look past the boundaries of society. I'd suggest you shut your stupid mouths before you have even tried it.

I would love if my girl were able to do some of those tricks and be that flexible, men think of the possibilities of wives with high levels of flexibility i'd pay for the class no doubt.

These classes really tone your body and make you feel sexy. Nothing wrong with that!

To all the haters grow up. You are probably the ignorant type of person who thinks Elvis is still alive, OJ didn't do it, and Michael Jackson never did anything wrong. For a person to get into a Fit Pole class to lose weight I think it's a great idea. Would you say the performers in Cirque de Soleil should find better things to do? Trying to hold your body on a small pole isn't an easy task. If you think that Fit Pole or any other establishment providing this service is sleazy then it sounds like you should go and join a class to see what all the fuss is about. Educate yourself before you blow up the comment page for a newspaper with ignorance. Misses Spagnoletti I wish you the best of luck in the New Year and with your new business.

uh...have tried it...it's sleazy. Doubt if anyone out there will get a gig with Cirque from using it. You are probably trash that are use to seeing it and it's nothing out of the ordinary. You probably know someone that does it for a living - others want to impress the man in their life. I won't spread my legs open on a pole to tone my arms...lmao!...there are much classier ways out there...i suppose this is perfect for a "particular" market, not for everyone.

You do have a chip on your shoulder. Yoga, and ballet have moves that require you to stretch the way that pole dancing does. Your vulgar words would say spread your legs. Oh, did I mention that gymnastics also involve the same moves. Look at many dancers who are flexible enough to do splits or a high kick above the head. I really don't know where you tried these classes but perhaps you went somewhere that wasn't a fitness studio. Where are you located?

These classes are not trash, they really tone your body, loose the wieght, feel relaxed and the time you spend for yourself is an experience that will keep you coming back for more.

Zumanity ( a vegas show similar to cirque de sole) hired Felix Cane( 2009 pole dancing world champion) for her pole dancing skills. She had a year contract in Vegas. She also was on the Tyra Banks show and Conan O'Brien. Therefore you are incorrect in saying you can't get a gig pole dancing. In addition, a pole dancer was hired for Micheal Jacksons ' This is it tour.' Special acts like aerial acrobatics will hire a person who has pole fitness background as an aerial dancer and a pole dancer are similar in terms of moves, flexibility and strength, the major difference is one uses a pole and the other two pieces of material hanging from above.

Tried it in Orange County- once...yuk!
Hereís an idea though...If you really want to mainstream an "exercise" (and i use the term loosely) that is a traditionally a demeaning act that women do for money in sleazy bars, how about learning to pick up a dollar with your vajayjay? Itís a great trick and quite useful after childbirth I hear - I think they use that move in Kooza. Again, just not for everyone...peace out.

I'm all for the advancement of physical fitness. I'm tired of the "run-of-the-mill" work outs. People need to open their minds. In my opinion, if you're writing negative posts about this, you're probably are the one that needs it the most!!!

After reading a bunch of the comments made on here about pole dance for fitness all I have to say is, wow. Small minds.
I've been teaching pole dance for fitness on the east coast long before anyone else. The way I teach is a cross between gymnastics and ballet. I don't teach stripper moves, matter of fact I make sure I correct those who do it. I like to see correct posture, pointed toes and perfect form...like I said a cross between ballet and gymnastics.
There are international pole dance championships every year and the winners have always been women who have worked in circus's(aerobatics), or ballerinas. Super strong and very flexible and they know showmanship. Its amazing to watch. The taking off of any clothing disqualifies you and no g-strings allowed.

Every pole dance business teaches differently. Sure you'll find the ones that teach the stripper stuff. A lot of house wives seem to like that for their marriages. I get those types along with women who use my services like a personal fitness trainer. I also get performers that want to learn better stage presents.
I took aerobics for years. It helped me lose weight and gain endurance but when I started learning to pull myself up on a pole it only took 3 weeks, once a week for other people to notice the different in my muscle tone. Instant muscles.
Pole dance is a total muscle strengthening exercise and also a cardio workout. Every time you pull yourself up your using your arms, abs and back muscles. Any floor work, works your legs and buttocks. Really throw yourself into the music and you've got your cardio.
If you still think its a stripper thing...all I got to say is take a free class, just once and then tell me how you feel the next day. I guarantee you'll be sore from the workout. Ever see a fat pole dancer? Not a stripper. A poledancer. There is a difference.

I am finding some of these comments highly offensive & very small minded!
To all those of you who think its trashy or seady i suggest you stop thinking of this in the same context as strip clubs or exotic dance & get urself on you tube & type in the likes of pantera blacksmith, deb riley & felix.
These women will show you the true ART of pole dancing & how much strength & technical ability it realy takes.
I bet most of the negative comments have been left by either men or past it old women who have nothing better to do than make comments on issues they have a lack of education on!
It has been around for alot longer than some of you think & my advice to you is open your minds!

It is nice to see some positive comments on this thread! There will always be those narrow minded individuals who do not appreciate the art of pole dancing and who fail to understand the levels of strength and flexibility involved. Yes, the art has been brought to our attention by those within the striptease industry but that does not mean that everyone who pole dances is a stripper.

Other dance forms such as salsa and belly dancing have far more sexual connotations yet are widely accepted within the mainstream fitness industry.

I teach pole dancing to men, women and children and I include elements of Mallakhamb and Chinese pole within my syllabus, these sports date back to the 12th Century and were used to train warriors for combat so those of you who have failed to understand modern pole dancing may want to do a little more research before being so critical.
