"For both wind and solar, whenever their special privileges are threatened, they fight in Congress and state legislatures to prevent their removal. For example last year the federal production tax credit for wind energy was due to expire on December 31st, but thanks to furious lobbying by the American Wind Energy Association, it was preserved for another year. Now it’s due to expire again and the fight to protect it is gearing up, but the one-year reprieve didn’t help the “democratization” of renewables much."

Oh, C'mon, the fossil fuel industry that is right around 150 years old, still has lobbyists "fighting" to keep their monopoly after all of this time you'd think fossil fuel would not need any considerations like tax breaks, grants, loans to be used to advance the industry. Some of this money is sent overseas to areas that can be considered NOT our friends. This is NO different than any industry trying to become the "defacto" product to use. Look at the battle between Edison, promoting DC power generation and Tesla working for GE promoting AC power generation. What is it that we use today? Somebody won, somebody lost. The fossil fuel industry has enjoyed a long run, now there's a new kid in town and as always they don't like it.
