This idea is nothing new. It was proposed by Peter E. Glaser and promoted by the Space Studies institute and the L5 Society.
"In 1968 he presented the concept for, and in 1973 was granted the U.S. patent on, the Solar Power Satellite to supply power from space for use on the Earth."
All studies at the time determined that for the concept to be feasible, a cheap method of launching materials from the moon would be required which was the genesis of the "mass driver" effort at Princeton and the Space Studies Institute.
