Editorial: Nuclear energy: a necessary evil - The China Post

Feb 22, 2008 | Posted by: swynkoop | Full story: www.chinapost.com.tw

Former Academia Sinica President Lee Yuan-tseh, a Nobel Prize winner and the most renowned scientist in Taiwan, stated recently that the use of nuclear power is necessary in Taiwan, though he affirmed he supported the creation of a "nuclear-free homeland."

No one is paying me to state my opinion, if you have to lie like that then you really aren't an honorable person.
as long as you tried to attribute positions to me i don't hold, i feel that these giant monstrosities the power industry calls windmills are ridiculous. Rich people rule the planet and they are not about to do anything they dont control and that is the name of the game with Nuclear power
as far as deaths they are piling up all over the palce the medical people call it cancer

And keep blaming ray-dee-ayshun.

Nuclear power is a deal with the devil, there are 64,000 tons of hot waste siting 2 mi off lake michigan in concrete casks, in holding pools the scum bags who made a buck off this are all long gone with the money leaving the taxpayers of the United States of America holding the bag, this is the reality of this closed down as non profitable plant. dont post some pro nuke guff unless you want to pay for this spectacle out of your own pocket, and bury this crap in your own back yard
64,000 tons just off lake Michigan, are you talking about Palisades?
How can Palisades have 64,000 tons when all of the nuclear plants in the US including all the shutdown and decommissioned plants which have dry casks on site only have about 85,000 tons total?

Word. However nuclearistas only wish they could dump their waste products straight into the environment like Oil and Coal.

But that could be the final outcome, at least for unusual situations - you know the seventh largest Earthquake in recorded history.

You did not answer the question!!
There is only about 85,000 tons of spent fuel total in the entire nation at all operating and shutdown plants so how does Palisades have 64,000 tons?

Even if nuclear waste increases it is still easier to deal with than pollutants released into the atmosphere. In the US power plants could simultaneously reduce nuclear waste and increase energy output if power plants were allowed to use highly refined fuel. However, despite the fact that other countries are already doing this people in the US remain so scared of terrorists getting their hands on the fuel that they refuse to allow it to be done for our plants.

first off quit babbling about he location called palisades it isnt what i am talking about, second the Kewaunee wi plant that is now closed down , has 64,000 tons of hot waste this figure includes the concrete sheilding they require, pro nuclear advocates try to minimize the amount of waste by not counting the actual weight of the containment systems, as far as your figure for the entire country thats your own stupidity

Well touched a nerve did I? I was just trying to find out which plant you were talking about as you never said.
As far as your numbers go you are still weigh off.
Straight NRC website

5.According to the Congressional Research Service (using NEI data), there were 62,683 metric tons of commercial spent fuel accumulated in the United States as of the end of 2009.
a. Of that total, 48,818 metric tons or about 78 percent were in pools.
b. 13,856 metric tons or about 22 percent were stored in dry casks.
c. The total increases by 2,000 to 2,400 tons annually.
Even adding the maximum amount of fuel usage at 2400 tons per year that brings the total to just over 72,000 tons nationwide.
Now I have to ask you some more questions as it seems fairly obvious to me you have never set foot in a nuclear plant therefore know actually nothing about them.
You say that "pro nuclear advocates try to minimize the amount of waste by not counting the actual weight of the containment systems"
When you say containment systems are you talking about the reactor vessel, if so that is certainly radioactive but only spent fuel is classified as high level waste the vessel will be buried in the ground directly in a low/medium level burial site and only weighs about 500 tons. All of the remaining reactor piping including steam generators and the pressurizer is another 500 tons.
In your original post you specifically stated that this waste was in in concrete casks and in holding pools. From the NRC numbers above they identify that 78% of spent fuel is in pools and 22% is in dry storage. For arguments sake lets say it is all in dry casks because that will increase the weight and help your argument. A fully loaded dry cask weighs a maximum of 360,000 lbs. If 64,000 tons of spent fuel were at the max weight you would have 356 dry casks on the property. There are not that many dry casks in service in the entire United States.
I was trying initially to ask you where you got your number from stating the total fuel load in the entire country. Instead of providing your resources you responded in a pithy manner as all anti-nuclear (people who know nothing about Nuclear power) do.
Stupidity?????
