Is thorium a better nuclear fuel than uranium?

Any thoughts on using use liquid thorium as a nuclear fuel? will it be safer than ever?

To me, it looks like a good idea and that we should begin to phase out our current nuclear technology.

The technology is as old as our uranium reactor technology, though for sum reason it lost the interest of the financial backers of the research. It is more efficient, with a more abundant fuel supply, and safer from meltdowns and proliferation. In my opinion we should start screaming about this to our neighbors and represtation in government. These reactors could change the face of America and the world. They are the key to the free power we have been dreaming of since Tesla left menlow park.
