EPA gives break to biomass over climate

Jan 13, 2011 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Under pressure from some members of Congress, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is easing up on regulating global warming pollution from facilities that burn biomass for energy.

It all depends, what biomass we are talking about! Corn starch, which first has to be 'enzyme' converted to sugar, and then fermented/distilled to about 190 proof ethanol {C2H5OH}, and then carries a U.S. Government subsidy of about $1.54/gallon, as in the U.S. is about 1/3 as efficient per gallon of E-85 flex fuel ethanol, as
opposed to direct sugar cane mollasses from Brazil!! Both crops starting raw materials, emit a tremendous amount of HEAT, not counting all the CO2, the former most important to accelerated anthropological regional climate change Global warming, "Desertification"}{a s all overhead air masses move in an North East direction in the Northern Hemisphere U.S.A./Canada, at about 500 miles a day, 20 knots/hr.} which join other huge "heat islands" I.R. heat from heat/CO2 when flowing over last 2000 years of colonialization/civilization Deforested lands, CITIES, TOWNS, COMMUNITIES, rising up, on their way North, and in Summer partly ovewhelming the constant cold/dry Arctic Circle airmasses moving South, and slowly causing late freezing Arctic ice anomalies; and in Autumn/Winter because hotter air
holds more moisture {Physics 101}, dumps all that exta fermentation/distillation heat absorbed moisture as earlier heavier freezing rains/snows, blizzards, with numerous floods, auto/truck accident deaths, hypothermia deaths, lost time from work having to clear roads, landing strips, Airlines delays, we get accelerated Le Chatelier principle of equilibrium retention,{Chemistry 101} anthropological global cooling hypothesis!!

For God's sake don't use cutting down TREES cellulose wood biomass, to synthesize Ethanol, which is the least efficient fermentation route!

It is better to simply hydrate ethylene, to ethyl alcohol! The cheapest petrochemical longest, for decades running, synthetic route to Industrial alcohol, also {C2H5OH}!! Dear EPA, Director Lisa!!

Addition to my #1 post : "...*emit a tremendous amount of HEAT, 353,000,000 B.t.u. or 88,940,000 kg.cal., per 1000 gallons of 190 proof ethanol, not counting all the CO2 byproduct, the former most important... Dear EPA Director Lisa

Economic Addition/Clarification to my # 1/#2 post:
Considering that a relatively large amount {~10 percent/gallon of gasoline} of 190 proof ethanol, is used as a oxygenating additive, replacement for past MTBE ..conversion of unburnt vehicular exhaust pipes hydrocarbons to CO2,{and first full oxidation of carbon monoxide CO, to CO2, carbon dioxide, and *water vapor} thru also catalytic converters, it may be more climate change environmently prudent to use petroleum based gases such as hydration of ethylene to industrial ethanol, as the gasoline oxygenating additive in place of corn/sugar cane fermented full fuel E-85 Flex fuel alcohol; ethylene co used to make polyolefins plastic polymers, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and a myriad other co-polymer derivatives, and some down-stream somrtimes waste unsaturated reactive gases!!

Note:* Combustion of gasoline, for example octane:
2C8H18 {l}+ 25 O2 {oxygen g.}...16 CO2 {g}+ 18 H2O {g}..exothermic delta H =~7600 k.cal.

Ethanol from cropland increases the price of food, at least people don't eat trees. Better synthesize oil into the best diesel, gasoline and LPG you can get, and leave the ethanol for an occasional nip. Moderation in all things, including F.M.'s brilliant screeds.

Answer to 'Brian _ G, Schwabach, Bavaria, Germany #4': Even Brazil, without coal, land oil, and 42 % deforested
irreversibly {not going back to join 500 miles/day moving overhead constant hot/humid year round air masses] 674k.cal/first 6 carbons glucose cellulose 1000 of years old timber, roots, stems, branches, photochemically endothermically ABSORBED by active green chlorophyll catalysed, trillions of leaves high tightly woven canopies, which used to absorb 99 percent of impinging '674k.cal.; Sunlight heat,{and CO2/H2O} reactants; did in 2009 stop the waste-full cutting/burning of "LUNGS OF THE WORLD"; soil erosion preventing soil cohesion extensive root systems; 1000 years old cutting/burning of their for farming, knee high, low folliage soybean plants, to convert into the soybean oil, methyl ester BIODIESEL fuel for export to the U.S.A.!!
U.S.A. is now blending 1/2 and 1/2 soybean oil flammable biodiesel derivative, from temperate zones U.S. Wisconsin soy-bean fields, with regular petroleum based modified compatible kerosene, the conventional diesel, and jet aircraft fuel!!

With about 2 off-shore Brazil Atlantic ocean
oil/natural gas platforms about to get on line last October 2010, and this year, along with the October 21st. 2009 Rainforests "Forestry Congress"
~25 Nations delegates pledge for ZERO Rainforests deforestations thru 2020, for ANY reasons including farming { low folliage sugar cane for ethanol vehicular fuels}, new oil drillings, new bauxite aluminum minerals minings, new gums, and resins for furniture lacquers; new exotic wood furniture veneers timber felling; waxes such as carnauba; and wild-life habitats preservations; that NATION, and hopefully also about 42 % Rainforest deforested Venezuela as well, is evidentally on its way, including planting 20,000,000 trees in Rio de Janeiro, by their next 2016 Summer Olympics to pro-actively Scientifically mitigate/adapt for the next 50, 100, to 200 years 'Desertification' climate changes, if nothing now is done about it!!

'Brian-G #4', as you can see from my qualifying partial alternative MTBE ethylene hydration to alcohol gasoline oxygenating additive substitution for many years now, in my #3 post, and I fully understand about a staple livestock feeding/human food crop like corn, rising supermarket food wholesale costs, retail prices, I'm not advocating 100 percent conversion to hydration of fossil fuels derived petrochemical ethylene feed-stock!

Actually water soluble Ethanol {C2H5OH}, with only one oxygen atom oxygenating gasoline additive; just like water insoluble Unocal patented past alleging leaking from gas stations
storage tanks into underground aquafers, MTBE {C5H12O} Methyl tert-Butyl Ether, which also has only one oxygenating oxygen atom in it's molecular moitie; I think ethanol is not as oxygenating efficient, as some other flammable relatively low flash point gasoline compatible 2 active oxygen containing organic solvents, like low molecular weight non-toxic organic esters, like methyl acetate *{CH3CO2CH3} whence many are used in some perfumes, and food flavorings, and only half the quantity in gasoline of MTBE/ ethanol need be added!!

I'm with you, Frankie, let's turn fossil fuel into fertilizer, not food into fuel. It's an evil, unethical and socially unjust mode of science, we've got to get this fixed. If you aren't vocal calling farmers "Welfare farmers, taking handouts from their neighbors to pump up the price of grain!" Starvation for the poor and an inefficient, water soluble burden on your car; a lose, lose.

Well 'Brian_G Schwabach, Bavaria, Germany #8', I don't think it's neither our station-in-lives to dictate agricultural land-use very dedicated, distillation technology educated U.S. farmers/ grain conversions derivatives, including corn-syrup substitute for saccharide sucrose into utilitarian products harvesters policies! Just simply brain-storming ideas!?
