If the students were really serious about making a statement about fossil fuel use, then perhaps those hypocrites would insist the air conditioning and heat be turned off in their dorms and classrooms, and start walking to school instead of demanding others make sacrifices.

Students have turned down their dorm room thermostats, walked to classes rather then drive, support public mass transit on campus, dug victory gardens to help out the community food drives, recycled their old textbooks , notebooks, and newspapers, etc . for years since President Jimmy Carter's famous 'sweater speech ' to the nation.
