$257 billion invested in renewable energy in 2011
Global investment in renewable energy reached a record of $257 billion last year, with solar attracting more than half the total spending, according to a U.N. report released Monday.

This article (like most solar-cheerleading) is misleading. With subsidies approaching 50% for solar projects of course it generated a lot of business, but it's not sustainable. Solar generated electricity is at least 3 times as expensive as existing production.
Plus, despite a record $1 trillion invested in wind and solar schemes during the last 5 years, new demand has exceed their production by 3:1. This means no CO2 reductions and just more (unreliable) and over-priced electricity. Solar is not a solution and it has been deployed before it is economically viable. EIA confirms that solar generated electricity is currently .2% of our electricity production. It has been an incredible waste of resources.
Solar should continue to receive money for research and development - if and when it is competitive, deployment might make sense.
