"What if even a tiny, tiny percentage of Indians or Chinese had the carbon footprint of fat-cats? Our planet would be ruined."

The answer is not to deprive 100% of 'everyone else' with a good life. The answer is to find ways to make good lives cost less to the environment in a sustainable way.

And I commend Jeremy for recognising the sad fact that he has profited without really contributing (a problem with Capitalism, see 'leveraged returns', the finance industry, etc).

There are two major problems with Capitalism. It rewards the wrong people (wasters and drones) while damaging the very resources that drive it.

i.e capitalists thrive on the maximum speed of exploitation of any 'common resource', from fish to rich ore to stands of pristine forest. The faster they can extract the 'best' profit from the resource and the less they 'remediate' the damage the more profit they derive to buy other resources to destroy.

It provides a strength to the economy when there is a surplus of high grade resources and good transportation routes such as in the 'new world' but when the best resources start running out, it leaves a mess and 'globalization' which is just saying that the capitalists start needing high grade resources from the rest of the world to maintain their existence. But that just leads the rest of the world to start needing those resources too, setting up a fight over the resources needed by civilization.

Capitalism is a tool, one that can be very destructive if left without safeguards and restraint. The Capitalists fight against those restraints which is why you have 'greenwash', denial and a host of social ills. The system CANNOT last (as resources become lower grade their is a need to conserve and utilize them better that must be imposed, aka regulation and social pressures).

This has already happened in the older economies of Europe (which is why the Capitalists disdain them as 'effete' and 'socialist'). The successes of the past are making it hard for the new world to realize it needs to change.
