We've had plenty of mass objections to wind farms in the past few years now we're witnessing dissent over something which, on the face of it, doesn't have anywhere near the impact as tall turbines with turning blades.

Of course it has. For each GW installed, Hydro destroys hundreds to thousands of square miles of fragile ecosystems.
