"Early signs indicate that there will be little room for Christians in the new political order after the appointment of a Christian governor in Qena sparked angry Muslim protests. Emad Mikhail was suspended for three months by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf in a bid to quell the unrest.
"Thousands of Muslims rallied outside the governor's office and blocked highways and a railway line into the province as they demanded Mikhail's appointment be reversed. They said his predecessor, also a Christian, had failed to stem sectarian violence and address poverty and unemployment. Other protestors said they objected to Qena being always governed by Christians, and the demonstration took a more aggressive turn as some radical Islamists demanded a Muslim governor; some even threatened to kill Mikhail if he took up office."
