Yes I agree wholeheartedly. The police here will use every way possible to extract money from both tourists and egyptians. If you don't pay they threaten you with a visit to the police station and often take your egyptian partner away for a night in the cells for no reason at all.
The USA should do something about this and contact the Egyptian government at the highest level.

does anyone know the truth about what is happening in luxor? i hear various stories about police beating old men who were prevented from harvesting their sugar because the governor had dignataries staying in the city. they were not allowed to use the streets for 3 days thus causing them to lose much of their harvest. also what is happening to all those residents who are going to lose their homes when the plans to demolish their homes takes place?

The police have always been a probelm in Egypt. I would easily state that they are the most brutal police force on the planet. And infact the regime is really a dictatorship. But due to the fact that America is buddies with Egypt, they seem to overlook this small detail. Personaly I feel that the country has gone for the birds after the assasination of Anwar Sadat. Hey but that is just me.
