Texas Schools Foot Big Bill for STAAR Retakes

The school year ended the first week of June for most Texas students, but for hundreds of thousands of them, it won't mean the end of class.
Well, the results are in. The academic achievement test known as STAAR was a big failure. Half the kids that took this misguided,$400,000,000, boondoggle are now being rounded up to be tutored, during the summer, in the false hope they can pass a retake test.
What is absolutely laughable are the school districts that are trying to convince parents to get their kids back into a classroom during the summer break by telling them the classes "are free." If the kids are sitting in a school district classroom, with the lights and AC on, and there is a teacher, or tutor, standing in front of them-the taxpayers are paying for it. It ain't free!
This achievement testing has become a "money pit", and that's all it is.
The reason the STAAR was adopted was to bring the Texas testing standards in line with the rest of the country. Any time a change happens, it is guaranteed to have some hiccups. Things will get sorted out over time.
In our school district, schools and teachers spent enormous effort in ensuring that all students were made aware of the difference in testing.
I think teachers do a great job in the classroom despite TAKS and STAARS. That's the problem. Core classes are what we should be looking at for a benchmark as to whether a student and teacher are getting it, not some freak of an accountability test to make people like Bill Gates and Hilary Clinton make money.
Even the TEC commissioner, Scott, said the accountability testing was a monster in the making. If the top dog at TEA said the testing was bad news, then who are you, and what are you to say different?
And don't hand me that crap about giving change time to work. The state has had accountability testing around since the 1990's. They change the testing and the rules every year. And the reason they keep changing the stuff is because it doesn't work.
