Hmm...is it just a coincidence that most of the students' surnames are Asian? Is it racist to suggest that THEIR family values are geared more towards success in the academic and professional worlds, than other cultures who actually celebrate violence, gang membership, and the prison lifestyle? Is that society's fault? No, gotta' lay the blame on the parents. Their children pick-up their values, so it makes a difference in what they see mom and dad do for a living (dentist or engineer as opposed to car wash attendant or Wal*Mart stock clerk) and what is expected of them. It's reassuring to know that in some families and cultures, "Failure is NOT an option!" Too bad that's not a culturally-universal standard.
