I remember supporters of the merger championing the data on the "fact sheet" to support the claims that Rowan was a much better academic institution than Rutgers Camden on the basis of that 100 point SAT advantage. No. On such grounds a teaching university with virtually no track record in research should be entitled to take over an entire campus of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Rutgers is of the 59 AAU (American Association of Universities) institutions, the elite group of research universities that includes University of Virginia, UC-Berkley, Penn and Princeton. Rutgers is the only AAU member in which all three of its campuses, Camden, New Brunswick and Newark, is listed as a single university with the same research library, the same high standards for tenure and promotion for its research faculty, and the same level of institutional support for research. Camden may be the smallest campus unit of Rutgers but it is not a branch campus with 2nd tier status. How anyone can think that fact-challenged Rowan is equipped to ingest Rutgers Camden and thus transform itself into a major research university is beyond me. South Jersey already has a research university. It's Rutgers Camden.
