"Davis says the former textbooks encompassed too many skills. "It had spelling included and it had a lot of phonics and it had writing and it had everything in there," Davis explained."
Well, shoot, don't let those pesky textbooks contain anything that a kid might need in the real world, like spelling, phonics and writing

The SOL's are the problem, more dumbing-down of our students. Why not let the teachers teach ? Get rid of the SOL's NOW!!!

What I meant by that was that we already had strong materials in place already that would support these other facets of the literacy diet (i.e. spelling, phonics, and writing) and only needed a strong reading piece to fill the gap in the curriculum. Hope that clarifies...we do teach all facets of the literacy diet in Charlottesville Schools, not just the reading piece.

This is all non sense, learning begins at home, expecting teachers to take up the slack where parents are falling down as parents is nuts. If you take an interest in your childs education they will always exceed no matter what tests you throw at them .

Check. Why would writing and spelling be included in a literacy test? Pure folly.

They will fail as usual. The teachers and students are complete failures.
