School vouchers in short supply? | The Columbus Dispatch

The state expects that only about 1,500 new private-school vouchers will be left for next school year, meaning some students probably will walk away empty-handed. The 14,000-voucher cap hasn't been reached yet, and at least 350 graduating seniors will leave new slots behind. Full Story

It's a scam. Some of the schools receiving the voucher students have pretty shaky performance rates and when the public finally wises up, they fold their tent and move on.

These aren't much of an alternative-unless you want your child to attend a Catholic school. Religious schools are the only ones in Columbus that accept the Choice vouchers. No thanks. Some of the charter schools are very good, some not-it's up to parents to check out their credentials and do whats best for their children's education.

Why don't they review current students to see whether they still live in academic emergency school areas?

Can't use a voucher for a charter school--a charter school is already a public school.

Ed Choice is a great program and gives parents an opportunity to find a better school when they live in a failing district. When parents have a choice, it opens up wonderful opportunities for the kids to succeed.

NW Leo, The real scam is the poor performing government schools; they have wasting money for years. Where is the accountability there? Not only have they wasted our money, but the impact they have had on families and communities will take generations to correct. Take a look at the most of the inner city schools in Ohio. They have been colossal failures. Thankfully a few students have escaped and given a better opportunity thru the voucher program

I am aware of that; my comment said nothing about vouchers for Charter schools. I said Charter schools are an alternative worth looking into-some are good, some are bad. Read my comment again-I said vouchers are usually for parochial schools.

"Choice" meaning a religious school, which isn't OK if you aren't Catholic...or an Evangelical. Not much of a choice.
