Our view: School choice idea confronts tough reality in Erie

Feb 13, 2011 Full story: Erie Times-News 34

The school choice debate is heating up in Harrisburg and in Erie, with an unlikely alliance supporting school vouchers at the state level and an odd objection raised to a proposed charter school in Erie.

Wrong. The administration can recommend anything they want, but only the board of education can adopt a budget, or execute negotiated contracts. In many districts the superintendent is intentionally kept out of contract negotiations by the board, to protect the relationship between the administration and staff. Stick to something you ACTUALLY know something about.
The administration sets the budget the board either accepts it, alters it, or rejects it.

The largest public-sector unions are the

National Education Association,

the American Federation of Teachers,

the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees,

and the Service Employees International Union.

These organizations have more than 7 million members combined, and they are very well financed.

The NEA and AFT, for example, collect about $2 billion a year in member dues and fees, most of which is from jurisdictions with agency shop rules

Besides raising compensation costs, unions reduce
government efficiency in other ways.

Unions tend to protect poorly performing workers, they often push for larger staffing levels than required, and they discourage
the use of volunteers in government activities.

Further, they tend to resist the introduction of new technologies and they create a more rule-laden workplace

WHO UNDERFUNDED THE PENSIONS the unions or the administration?

Simple question but for some reason you are either too dumb or scared to answer it.

By STEVEN GREENHOUSE
Published: February 13, 2011

Governors and mayors facing large deficits have set their sights on a relatively new target — the soaring expense of health benefits for millions of retired state and local workers.

Pension Tsunami HAS Reached Shoreline

Pension expert Marcia Fritz of the California Foundation for Fiscal Responsibility had it right when she told me last week that states are "far beyond nibbling around the edges" on pension issues.

Concerns over mounting unfunded public-employee retirement benefits confronting states and municipalities have been growing for years but the tidal wave is no longer on the horizon, it's at the shoreline.

And the time has come to advance tough – even painful – workable solutions.

Fortunately there are many remedies; it will just take the political will to take on the public-sector unions.

END ALL PUBLIC SECTOR PENSIONS!!!

Pension funds are falling farther and farther behind every year toward a fiscal event horizon beyond which there is no return.

These numbers are not Democrat or Republican, Right or Left, progressive or reactionary, fair or unfair.

The numbers are the numbers. Reality is reality.

Politicians, pension fund officials, brokers, placement agents, financial institutions and union bosses – all enriching themselves from perpetuating fiscal insanity – either are in a state of total denial or cynically misleading citizens and public workers so they can take their cut and run before this whole rotten cathedral of profligacy collapses.
