Instead of attacking this persons spelling (because you got the jist) why didn't you answer some of the concerns he has? I mean if you are a teacher that is not part of this study, then why are you so angry at the taxpayers for calling out the ones who are abusing time?

I agree with everyone and I'm proud others have jumped at a chance to respond to this news cast. As someone who teaches math I would love to know how accurate these statistics are and what they really are getting at. I know as a first year teacher I was required to be out of school a certain number of days with a substitute covering my classes as part of a state mandate. I bet those counted towards their statistics - and how unfair!

This is just some of what all of YOU dedicated Professional Teachers do when a Taxpayer tells you how they feel towards your crying.
You make fun of where I live and you make fun at my spelling and grammar and tell "ME" to go to school as some of you teachers are the Elites and us Taxpayers or Non teachers are dog crap as you are the best thing since water was discovered.

Well, I am a straight shooter and call it like I see it and read it and hear it. The vast majority of Teachers are Liberals!!!! Did I hit a nerve or did I hit it correctly???

How about these facts;
WHY did YOUR School “force” MY kids to watch an Anti American Movie from the biggest Liberal Al Gore ‘An Inconvenient Truth’?????? WHY did all of YOU teachers allow this trash of a lie movie to be shown to millions of children telling them that America is killing Polar Bears??? WHY??? Again, I don’t send MY kids to school to be brainwashed and political indoctrination by Anti American Liberals who pose as Teachers. So, please tell me exactly “WHY” this movie was FORCED on my kids and then when they come home crying telling me please daddy, don’t kill the Polar Bears and YOU teachers have the balls to say that you’re not “partially” the problem?? The School system is guilty of political indoctrination of American children and all of you know it!!!
Did you know that a Court has ruled that If teachers present the Film they may be in breach of section 406 of the Education Act 1996 and guilty of political indoctrination.

Who cares if you’re sick, just take the time off and stop complaining. I don’t know if your sick unless my children tell me they had a sub or another teacher. BUT.. If all you Teachers come onto a PUBLIC INTERNET POST and spew your complaints then accept criticism when it’s tossed as I have back from all of you.
If all of you posted just the facts and didn’t “ADD” that OTHER professionals need to be looked at (ATTACKED ME AND OTHER WORKERS) and if you all just stayed between yourselves and just said to yourselves “who cares” then this would be a non topic. But when you complain about “US” other professionals as if we are trash compared to a teacher, then be prepared to get hammered by us back.
One of you said that I’m NOT qualified to make comments about what teachers do because I’m not a teacher. Well, your right I’m NOT a teacher and don’t want to be but that “same” guideline applies to ALL of your comments back claiming that all YOU teachers are qualified to comment about what other workers do for a living.
Just don’t ever forget… IF YOU POINT YOUR FINGER AT SOMEONE THERE ARE THREE OTHER FINGERS POINTING RIGHT BACK AT YOU!!!

I think your absenteeism figure for Schenectady is too low. I am a substitute teacher there, I work near daily in the district. There are often open jobs since there are not enough subs to fill all jobs.
I am certified. It may be allowed to sub without training BUT every school has a requirement and a BA is required by all local districts.
Other PRIME call in days- MOTHER'S DAY weekend, any Monday,Super Bowl Monday.
Teachers are not that committed to the child.
How about Eric Ely coming into a school as a substitute,undercover, and see how many are really absent??

I left my home at 6:45 a.m. I arrived by 7:10 to work with a student. The student did not show up.

I gave energetic presentations all day, helped students in study hall, then stayed after with a student.

Then, I drove with a student and her family to Albany so she could be presented with an award, which our department nominated her for.

I got home at 11:00 last night.

Did you read my earlier post that I came in with two broken knees and a broken foot and that my coworker came in with pneumonia for a month?

People really need to stop generalizing the behavior of a few!!!!

And, yes, Elaine Houston, it's Friday, and not only am I at school, I got here at 6:55, as did my co-worker across the hall.

Prattsville, I don't know what happened to my "5.5" hour day yesterday!

Also, Greer, and the other subs who have written in: I have had really bad subs. Should I start generalizing about them?? I won't, because for the most part, the people who come in for me are wonderful and professional. I won't stoop to calling all the subs bad because of the behavior of a few. One such sub broke the flowers off the mums in my room and handed them out to the students as "passes". He also had his laptop with him and rather than follow my lesson plans, which I painstakingly wrote and typed up, he taught online courses all day!!!!

One more thing: to those of you who keep writing in things like "we taxpayers" are tired of "you teachers". We are not a separate species. NYSUT is made up of 600,000 families who are active in your communities, and yes, we are TAXPAYERS!!!!

And, if teaching is such a piece of cake, why have there been huge teacher shortages for the last few years?

Everyone has written in quite energetically and passionately. Maybe you could use your passion and energy and commitment to help children. Go to college for 5 years and get your Master's Degree and help the teacher shortage!!!(I am writing this sincerely) It is a wonderful job, and my students are wonderful.

I just noticed "Net" accused me of attacking someone's spelling. I said nothing about spelling. I said he should take writing classes that teach the writer to write with facts, rather than generalizing and stereotyping. Also, I believe I've written politely and thoughtfully, rather than with an attitude. You're right, my school was not in this study. I personally have over 200 days saved up.

My point is that I don't appreciate the teaching profession constantly being attacked because of a few bad apples. It does no one any good. I'm afraid talented young people will not want to be trained to be teachers in the future--who would want to take the abuse?

I understand that teaching is not an easy job especially today when the kids are much worse that we could have ever been, BUT all I'm saying is address the issues instead of attacking someone because they don't agree with you. There are good and bad in EVERYONE including teachers, and you made yourself look just like the "bad" ones with your comments. How do you know he is not a parent?? Would you address a parent of one of your students like that?? If you want people to understand you, make us, don't attack.

I felt we all wrote thought out comments. "No lies" went on the attack. That was a very nasty message he wrote, so I really don't know what you're talking about. And, you know what, today's kids are NOT "much worse than we could have ever been". The kids are the best part of my day. All this other stuff is the worst.

And, I did address the issues, with FACTS that I know of, first hand, not wild assumptions and generalizations.

Also, I enjoy a good working relationship with my students' parents. I would never address someone the way "no lies" did.

Actually, it sounds like "no lies" is very angry was waiting to get things off his chest. I agree no one should be using "nuts" or "clueless" in their responses. I did answer if this is an angry parent. If it is, he still doesn't have the right to talk that way. Yes, everyone has the right to air their opinions. However, I would terminate a meeting if the person was talking like he did. I do talk to parents face to face almost daily. And, yes, I calmy listen, and am always willing to negotiate.

Here is the short of it as I have a long travel back home from work and I will add more this evening.

First off, as I originally stated that it was the Teachers that posted attacks against other workers professions, i.e., Firefighters, Police, Road crews, etc. If all of YOU teachers would have just watched what was reported on 13 and just kept quite of talked amongst yourselves (not on a public post) this would all be a mute point.

BUT, it's when all of the teachers come and post their "don't pick on me pick on everyone else" attitude and post that the other worker professions should also be scrutinized, is exactly what the public "taxpayers" who are the funding source for School Districts speak up.

I just found out yesterday that there is this little law for all of you under paid teachers that , "ready for this" GIVES YOU A MANDITORY RAISE EVEN THOUGH A SCHOOL BUDGET IS DEFEATED!!!!!.

So, YES, I'm angry at many things about the school system in general including teachers and their crying about what they do. I'm one BIG angry Taxpayer who DOSENT WANT TO GIVE YOU TEACHERS A ANTOMATIC SALIERY INCREASE EVERY YEAR!!!

If taxpayers VOTE NO to a school budget, NO MEANS NO!!! But, you teachers I'm SURE don't go and lobby for this law to be rescinded to remove this burden on Taxpayers now do they!!

More erroneous arguments, No Lies, and this is far from a "dialogue." No one attacked any other profession; this all started by teachers questioning why they are the ones to be scrutinized, not demanding that other workers be attacked instead of them; it was not meant to be a literal request to count sick days of other workers but a rhetorical question of why it's always the teachers, no one else, who are targeted. Once again you have missed the point; I imagine it's tough to see through all that rage. I for one am not waiting for "more later" but signing off now and hope others will do the same. Give up, dedicated teachers, you have better things to do with your precious time. All you are accomplishing now is giving this guy (or gal) more fuel for his/her erratic rants and a forum for him/her to spew anger and throw tantrums. Sign off and shut him down. Ignorance is the hardest fight to fight.
