They talked about cuts last year and backtracked!

Cut those who don't live in Polk first.

No, cut those who suck, no matter where they're from.
A RIFF is a great way for principals to get rid of ineffective and lazy teachers without going through all the paperwork and red tape. And when they get all upset, "man, sorry, we had to RIFF ya, and we hate it and wish you the best of luck." But we have great teachers both from Polk and outside of Polk; we also have some real local-grown "gems," though, who couldn't make a bread sandwich but got their jobs based on family, spoils, luck, or a combination.

cut parapros...you have to have parapos in a severe and profound classroom..the teacher couldn't do all that is needed for a disabled child because some are in wheel chairs ...need diappering..hand feed ...and tube feed...some have vision problems..seizures...could you do this job ..they don't get paid anything hardly but they are welling to do this

Cut those who have doctorates and work in the library! I mean, really, does it require a doctorate to help a 1st grader check out a book? Look at the Sate website and see how much JUST the "media specialist" at Van Wert, Rockmart Middle and Rockmart High make! CRAZY! Get rid of them 3 and save $250,000! Leave the ones who actually TEACH alone and cut those "do nothings"!

okay........so you'd rather have someone who can change a diaper than someone who can actually teach the children?

You can go to www.open.georgia.gov to find out what any Polk SD employee earned for 2012 calendar year (1/1-12/31). Keep in mind some may have retired. I have a problem with an elementary PE teacher making twice what a 1st grade teacher right out of college makes but that how the system is set up. I still don't think anything non-academic, though, should amount to such a large part of the salary budget! Each school needs to be accountable for keeping those expenses down. Over and over I see speech-language with $60k+!!! Counselors making $60k+ but yet bullying and such aren't improving. There's a 3rd grade teacher listed at $82k - does she have top test scores in her class? Duff -$96k. Dover -$80k Hand -$86k. Hendrix -$96k and aren't principals !

The problem with teachers salaries is the current Years of Service x Degree matrix salary structure.

In other words, a PE teacher with a ED (Education Doctorate) can make much more than say a Biology or Math teacher with only a Bachelor or Master's degree. This salary structure has no basis in MARKET VALUE, which means those Science, Technology, and Math folks can earn a lot more in the market than teaching.

In addition, you will never convince me in a million years that you need a graduate degree to teach elementary age kids. My mother taught back in the 60s and she had some college, but not a degree. By all accounts, she was an excellent teacher.

Don't get me started on head football coaches making $96k+.

Priorities people.

You sound like you are a Para Pro who wasn't smart enough to obtain a teaching degree. Spelling and punctuation may have been a down fall for you, but don't worry there's still Hooked on Phonics, it may work for you. Don't hate on teachers just because you failed all of your classes.

30 positions will be the reduction. I'm wondering if the will offer early retirement. There are a lot of positions that can be cut other than teachers or para pros. I have wondered many times why there are so many people working in the office. I'm hoping the cuts will be across the table. I would bet my money that not one male sports teacher gets cut.

do you want the certified teacher to stop teaching the children and change a child..hand feed..or plug up a feeding tube..if the parapro was not there the teacher would not have alot of time to teach the class..the parapro frees the teacher from these duties so the teacher can educate the students..also, you could put another certified teacher in that classroom and it would cost the county a certified teacher's pay $40 to $50 thousand a year this made no sense

Wrong, I'm not a teacher, and I'm far from fat. I'm also not a bastard, I know who my father is, you probably(oh look at that, I actually know how to spell the word probably, and don't have to shorten it to prob like you do) do too, he's well known in Polk County.

I've made only 2 posts on here, 3 now, counting this one, and I have not said one word about disabled children. Twice you've made the assumption that I do not have a job, you're wrong on that account also, I actually have a great job. You would be surprised if you knew who I was, and where I work. You need to try some anger management classes, as well as continuing education classes. Obviously you are a backwoods hillbilly with no education.

I'm not sure why you hate teachers so much, maybe you're jealous of them perhaps. Teachers could be very helpful to you, perhaps they could offer to tutor you, so that you also may have a great job, and you wouldn't have to continually say "do you want fries with that" at your low paying fast food drive-thru job.

Never the less I stand by my statement which was "Cut some of dumbazz parapros, leave the teachers alone."

We have four in our office and yet one rarely at the front desk? I think they're eating!
