I am a teacher at South Gate and I want to make something clear: the shooting took place at 3351 Firestone Blvd, not 4100 Firestone Blvd, which would be OFF campus. The parents were given similar information by our administration, that the shooting took place off campus. Campus security is very poor on our campus. We also have a very ineffective discipline program, with kids assaulting each other, teachers, the principal and even our campus police, and not being expelled because they are special ed, etc. One of our teacher had warned the administration back in February that our campus was not safe, and that he feared it would take a shooting or a rape to make us take the issue more seriously. Even after someone impersonating a Beyond the Bell employee had made his way onto our campus and worked with our students for nearly 3 weeks before being caught, there have not been any changes. And now, here's our shooting. Thanks be to God that it was not fatal. At the faculty meeting yesterday, the district and administration were all so proud of our response, and that of the police. Patting us and themselves on the back. The truth is, there should be no need for a response - although these things can not always be prevented, we can sure as hell try.

The courts, politicians, and the government have totally destroyed this society. There will be no coming back from this disaster of profligate spending, bankruptcy, and the unending invasion of third world peoples. This utter failure will only get worse because people in power are still too dumb to acknowledge it or recognise obvious solutions.

I completely agree with the teachers comment. This school is not safe at all!!! I had an isuue with my daughter seeing a non student of south gate high school. I went in to talk to the counselor ( Mrs. Rodriguez) and she said I was over reacting that it was impossible for them to keep track of all the people that went in and out. she also stated that they had other MORE important things to worry about. I was so upset that day and sick to my stomach. I am a parent that is interested in my children education and this school has no interest in helping me. All the gates around the school are open. I drop off my children and its so easy for them to just walk out. My daughter might not be her priority BUT IT IS MINES!! My two chldren will not be attending South Gate next year.

Doesn't sound like your principal knows the law very well. Here are some resources to help:

Discipline Of Students With Disabilities
In Elementary And Secondary Schools
U.S. Department of Education
Office for Civil Rights

"OCR does not prohibit a school district from employing its informal, reasonable procedures short of a significant change in placement for dealing with children who are endangering themselves or others.

Where a child presents an immediate threat to the safety of others, school officials may promptly adjust the placement or suspend the child for up to 10 school days, in accordance with rules that are applied evenhandedly to all children."

Wipe out the faculty and bring in new faculty. Faculty that care and take pride in their job. Preferably employees from outside of the area. And I mean anything from office staff to educators. Even when I attended (it wasn't so bad then) the faculty in most areas of the school were just so horrible. They were there to do the paper work and collect a pay-check. Granted, there are a very small amount of them who still care and to those of you....don't give up.

Now the biggest problem and solution....PARENTS! You cannot expect a school to raise your children. It is your job to teach them right from wrong, morals, values, etc. You need to be involved; Parent - teacher night is not enough. Be seen, be heard, be present, let your child and their teachers know you mean business.

Most of the city of South Gate is comprised of immigrants or children of immigrants. What this city has become is not what you came here for. Get it together, take pride in what you are and rise above.

I am a parent that is very involved. I do teach my children morals and values. 50% of their personality is what you teach and 50% is what they choose. I will not let my children go to a school that the staff makes it hard for you to be involved. I went in to the school and it was a mission to speak to someone I would Email them with no responce I will call them and no responce. I do have to give credit to the teachers two of her teachers really worked hard with me. My daughter is a straigh A student with AP classes she was starting to slack off a little and I was trying to do my job as a parent, I am not asking for the school to raise my children, But the 6 hours that they are there I can atleast expect some kind of cooporation from the adminastration not an answer like I received. I agree we can not give up on our school system, and by me not returing my children back to south gate might not be the right thing to do. But it is the correct thing to do for my Family.

I am a parent of a student at SGHS. My daughter was one of the students involved with the imposter. This imposter went as far as organizing a field trip to UCLA which all the parents (including myself), unknowingly signed consent forms. Thank God it didn't take place. Otherwise, he could've abducted these teens and it would've gone unperceived for hours before anyone put 2 and 2 together. So sad --- and if all the school can do is lift their hand to point a finger, that same hand is pointing three fingers back at them. Whatever happened to checking credentials.

Well, I hope you'll know better than to ever trust these people with your children again! It makes as much sense to send your kids to this "school" as to drop them off in a bad part of town every day.
