Vote on school merger with facts, heart

Dec 4, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Gloversville Leader-Herald

Mergers might not be the best solution to all problems. We live in small districts because we like the ambiance of small towns, of small schools.

i've been out of OE school almost 30 years. and althou i loved the smallness of that school. i was not encouraged or motivated on from highschool. I am now a Dolgeville resident, and my children all went to dolgeville school. i purposely kept them out of OECS, because education wise, it did nothing for me.. but even 30 years ago ST J. was a far worse school than OECS. and i'm sure things have not changed. I have 2 children left in DCS highschool, and there are many oecs kids in their classes. things are fine, there are no problems with the kids, all is well in 'denmark'.
i honestly dont know. all the legistics of the merger, the taxes, the school.. bla bla bla.. what i do know is the 2013 graduating class of OECS has 13 kids in it.. 13!! I think that speaks for itself.
It would be a terrible shame to close the doors of OE after the additions & the money that has been put into this school to make it bigger and better. what a waste, will it sit, like dolgevilles elementary school and become nothing other than an eyesoar?
If the funds are not there to keep this school running what are the options? A merger with st J>i'm sorry, thats a joke< If keeping it an elementary school saves it, why not.
Voting no again

Isn't it nice that tonight there is a board mtg to discuss the budget which is taking place at 6pm while the time of Elementary Christmas concert is at 630pm Nice that the board decided to do this meeting at the same time as the concert which segregates the parents of the younger kids from attending the board mtg rather than attending their kids concert. Works out well for the board, after all they don't have any kids in OE so what do they care, during which time of course Russom will push for cut cut cut to keep anyone in doubt of their vote in line out of fear. I wonder, since the board is short one member is it legal for them to vote on anything? Then again, it doesn't really matter because most of the board are in Russom's back pocket.

Dolgeville resident: you should probably know how the classification system works for sure.(nYSPHSAA handbook p. 181-182). Classification numbers for team sports are determined by total number of students (girls and boys) in grades 9-11. So for this year, Dolgeville enrollment was 181 and OE was 73= 254. The cut-off number for D for football is 259 and below. So while you are right that this year the numbers would not have bumped you up to a C, any "larger" class going through could throw your numbers up, possibly for 3 or more years. While it is not really a big deal, for those people who really worry about that should know the process.

OE grad you say DCS is so much better, no facts at all, ST j had numerous grads go to Cornell, this past year 1 went to Harverd, Thirty years ago you say ST J worse than O E why? You people out of valley have a back woods mentality, annex O E and end the misery.

I'm voting no. Now the Supt. will be able to do his appoined job and close what ever part of the school he wants and send the student elseswhere. Jobs will go. Good luck to all. Does anyone know whats going with the clown who punched the cop. I wonder what he will do when he is on the Prison bus to Dannamora and they change the route to Attica. HaHa

I still contend that OE should vote down the merger, St. Johnsville is a crap school. They just want us for the additional tax revenue, not our kids! Let's survive as long as we can on our own, when and IF the time comes that we can't run the school any longer, THEN and ONLY THEN should we be looking to other districts to take us over!

Thanks, I thought so. This makes sense to why my friends in dolgeville say they will never tuition all of our students, just enough so it only helps out the bottom line for taxes and they can kick out any OE student who gets out of line. Not if they cant go to the dome for football. Glen is on top of things as usual!

If your satisfied with a no frills basic education, no electives,..etc then by all means vote no. I have to assume your children will not be attending college. We live in a very techy world where the students of today need more than a basic education. Oppenheim can not provide the education that is competitive for college entrance, scholarships, or meet the demands of today's graduates for any marketable career. I SAY VOTE YES!!!!

What taxes does S T J want?, Watch your taxes with your 9 million budget, even transferring your kids. You think that's going to be cheaper, still have super, still have building cost, greater transfer of students cost, you nuts are living in a fog. Stay ther ST J does not need you.

Are you suggesting that OE graduates do not attend college? Do you have any idea how many graduates of OE are now college graduates, many with their master's degree. Furthermore, OECS has more technology then most area schools do now. How many other area school have smart boards in every classroom? Ipads? Portable Laptops? Do you really know what you are talking about? Obviously NOT!

I believe the formula for figuring the size or class for a school is different for football, than the other sports...

This may be because they had the classes in the past that have been cut from the schedule now. Many courses that were taught to help students prepare for college are no longer offered. No business courses, several college level courses have been eliminated and advanced math courses are gone. You can't offer advanced courses with part time instructors or in areas where positions have been eliminated. Just wanted you to have the current information. Please read the merger study. Thanks.

Either learn what is really going on here or do like your name and run with it. You post on here like you have a clue but in reality your LOST. OE was perfectly fine until someone told certain folks they could possibly get a raise + bonus. Then all of a sudden because ST J didn't want the tax hike of merging with FtP OE got sucked into a line of BS longer then the Great Wall Of China! Vote yes on fear and stupidity, or VOTE NO AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE, in the education system!!!

I have one and I've read through it on several occasions. You have your opinion and I have mine. I base mine on facts not half told information and scare tactics.

No kidding... "frustrated" must be just that- to the extreme- with his/her own life. Every post is about how much someone else makes or HYPOTHETICALLY might make in the future. They also forget that the Merge Study itself outlined for the schools involved what the only sensible option is (STJ/OE merge) NOT the people of STJ. He/She is totally freaking out. Accusation after accusation with nothing to back them up.

Nope, sorry- not Dan, but I do share his quest for having facts to back up the senseless rantings of many of the posters on here. What's wrong with asking for proof?? Isn't that how people SHOULD form their opinions? Or because you apparently "know what you're talking about" everyone should listen to you? Huh?
