It's unfortunate when bullies feel the need to spread their psychoses to others. Oh well. The younger geeks of the world can take solace at their 10-year reunions when they find their childhood tormentors have gained 50 pounds since high school graduation, are married to some schmuck and have worked their way up to second-shift line cook at the Perkins off of Exit 132.

So would they still have displayed these symptoms eventually anyway and the bullying just makes them come out sooner? Or does the bullying actually cause the symptoms?

Look, it is up to parents to make sure their kids are not susceptible to being bullied. Teach them to stand up for themselves by, among other things, not standing up for them.

This is true up to a point but sometimes an adult has to step in, for the child's own safety.

I was bullied by my father, I was bullied by teachers, I was never bullied by anyone my own age. If these researchers had come seeking to ask me questions when I was a child they would have got nothing from me, nothing, and all the while they spoke I would have been wishing them dead.
These experiences lead me to doubt the accuracy of these findings. I did not trust adults, and to be honest I still do not trust teachers, or people who say I can trust them and expect me to without showing that they are indeed trustworthy.
To put it another way, children who are bullied by children are bullied not because they are showing signs of a blooming mental illness but because they are showing signs,
sooner spotted by the young bullier than by the righteous teacher,of a major distrust of adults, and it is therefore assumed by the young bullier that the child to be bullied will not be comfortable seeking protection from the righteous teacher to stop the bullying.
Adults, not children, are the cause of bullying.

Any trauma in childhood can cause an arrest of mental development which can lead to psychotic and irrational behaviour later life. The same goes for adults just look at post traumatic stress disorder because that is really what a child with a traumatic episode in their life is suffering from.
