I wish my school had had this when I was growing up. Sounds like fun - and very beneficial to sanity.

Finally!!! The benefits of getting kids outdoors to learn will be life long! I'm glad the information is getting out to the mainstream media. Bravo!

Simply put. I love this way of educating children and think our children are missing out on some of the most enduring and life long lessons! We need to start a movement in the USA. Deanna

Our PE teacher Mr Welham (he's dead now) used to do this, but it wasn't until I left school and met up with a friend many years later who told me that there was reason he did this.

He was a pervert, and it makes my flesh creep to think about how many pre/mid and post pubescent boys he stood and leered at in the showers over the years. The Games Masters room/office had it's own private shower and he used to head off there and relieve himself in the shower
after school had finished for the day.

Our school said it was compulsory, but I stood my ground and said if they wanted me to have a shower then I wanted a cubicle and privacy and not the whole communal thing, but they said no. The teachers used to stand one each end of the showers and watch, no way was I going to be subjected to that. They tried to suspend me for it, but didn't suceed. Plus I manged to wear the boys PE uniform, as they made the girls wear gym knickers and tight vest tops, which I was not going to wear in front of male teachers. We did have skirts but the day they told us to take them off and just wear the knickers, I swapped to shorts and rugby shirt, again after a huge fight with the school.
Even in infant school, I refused to do PE in my pants and Vest like the other kids, and my Mum had to be called to the school, as I refused to get undressed. My Mum stuck up for me and I got to wear shorts and T-Shirt.
I have always been very private about my body, and it is my right. I will stick up for any kids I have like my Mum did for me, if this subject were to arise.
I am now a regualr gym user, and I do shower, but only because they are private cubicles.
My body is for me and my husband, and only if he is good

Did anyone think to start a rumour about her that she had a strange underwear fetish?!

I was at a mixed school in the early to mid 80s and we had a communal shower where we had supervised showers by a same sex teacher. My embarrassing moment (one of many at school) was as I was trying to have a quick inobtrusive shower, my hair got caught round the taps and the teacher had to come and untangle me. Cue lots of staring from my classmates!

My mum was a primary school teacher at the time and said that teachers were told they had to observe pupils during PE to look for signs of physical abuse or neglect, which may explain why some of them used to stare at us intently. Although there may have been the odd one with an ulterior motive by the sound of it.

That made me laugh as you have just confirmed for me our PE teachers were staring intently for other reasons entirely. Otherwise they'd have spotted that I was five foot 6 and weighed 6 stone aged 16-18.(Stepmotherly neglect).

I later trained as a primary school teacher too, and no, we were never told to stare at kids getting changed. We were taught to look for neglect/abuse but it would be unprofessional to do it that way.

I remember showers at school - in fact, occasionally the teachers used to come in as well (Grammar School in Essex in the 80s). I was mortified first time I found out about them, but soon learnt to just chill once I got to about the fourth year.

With regard to swimming pools, which someone above mentioned, plenty still have open changing rooms. It is just the more modern pools don't have seperate Men's and Women's changing areas any more so obviously its cubicles for all...

More imagined abuse from the 1980s from DJW. From whom did you steal this one, DJ? Frozen thirty years in the past, and in a world of fantasy, imagining people staring at you.. Staring just at you, DJ. No wonder you won't go outside. You know that we all think you're paranoid. Lol. You're psychotic as hell, DJ.

More fantasy. More hard evidence of a chronic detachment from reality. See what I mean? Hey, DJW, I AM Mr. Putin!

Queens NYC, late 1950's. Swimming was incorporated into Phys. Ed. which we had all 8 semesters of high school. Guys swam nude in the boys only classes. Girls had moth eaten wool bathing suits distributed by the swim department. We had to pass a basic Red Cross swim test to graduate from high school. Never understood the nude swimming classes for boys

Mather High School, 1964-1968. I HATED swimming naked. It made the water seem even colder than it actually was.

From what I understand, the girls swam nude also. My mom graduated in 1952 from Thornton Township High School. They wore school issued suits that were ill-fitting and would regularly swim out of them in class.

Frederick Rhine
I was in Lane Tech's class of 1977, and indeed, we boys swam nude. Not the girls, I was told. I thought it was bizarre.
