I hear stuff like this all the time and I wonder how I got in, or even how some of my friends got in. I guess the extracurriculars really make a difference.

if you can't even get in without a 4+, what does this say about opportunities for higher education for our kids?

"NOT WELL SET UP FOR EDUCATING OUR YOUNG" is what I think.

Consider how many kids don't have a 4+ GPA. Are none of them worthy of learning university or college level competencies? Why?

This has become an unrealistic competition for the top 5% of kids, leaving the other 95% in the dirt. College should not be like the Olympics where only 1 of a million can "make it".

How ridiculous. We obviously just don't credit higher level learning here.

They put so much weight on the extracurriculars. You hit it on the head.

Yup, it's the extracurriculars. I knew some people with 1300+ SAT scores who didn't get it, while the class president was accepted and she never had an honors or AP course

What's so great about UF? I haven't heard of any ground breaking grants or research coming out of Gainseville. I remember it being famous for serial killers and gatorade...oh, and the Noxema Girl went there.

Well, If they let anyone in the college then the classes would be slower, professors would constantly have to stop and repeat themselves, and the school would be awful as a whole. Don't you think the students that worked hard and recieved the high scores deserve to get into better schools than the students that goof off and don't do anything in high school? Colleges want serious students, not ones that would bring the school down.

I want to go to either UF or South Carolina, I have a 3.78 weighted gpa and haven't taken the SAT yet, but I've got around 150 volunteer hours and quite a few extracurriculars under my belt. Any advice or hope...maybe? hah

tim, if this is really you. Some advice please. My daughter applied to UF and just received her rejection notice last night. We were all shocked. She carried a 4.07, 4.3, 4.5, 4.5, 9th -12th respectively. A 30 Act. Senior Class vice president. A Slew of volunteer hours. More honors than you care to read. Cheerleader Co Captain 11th and Capt 12th. Homecoming Princess 11th and Queen 12th (nominated by peers based upon positive character traits,(Christian School)). FCA officer, FC Cheerleaders All-Star and on and on. A truly beautiful person on the outside but more importantly truly beautiful on the inside. Couldn't have worked harder or done more. What gives. Just don't get it?

This is completely discriminatory! They should allow people to be admitted into college the old fashion way, not through bunting some pig skin and not pulling their weight around like the rest of the other students do. We do so well and try so hard when it comes to academics only to be rejected while some motard who only knows football gets a free ride. That's a load of shit if you ask me

First of all, it isn't that great of school, it's good not not amazing.

Second, if you do extracurriculars, volunteer, and have a superior GPA and HPA which isn't hard if you just try at then you'll be fine.

All these parents complaining need to just suck it up and realize their kids were lazy and didn't do their best.
