I notice a few discussions about showers in PE lessons. Wondering, does snyone still have to do this in nearly 2011?

I had to in school some years back and always had to go in naked in front of everyone, from age 11 to age 16. I rememebr trying to go in with my pants still on the first time and being told to take them off by the PE teacher! I would be astonished if this sort of thing still went on.

Was anyone as nervous as me first time? I was bricking it! Never liked it but got used to it a bit.

Welsh boy, when was this? What was your PE kit at school (indoors and outdoors)?

Outdoors was just football / rugby kit and indoors for gym was just white shorts, no top and barefoot.

We also had swimming and showers were compulsory after that. We had to take trunks off.

At least you didn't have to swim nude too, as in some other schools. Was it only the PE teacher who saw you nude at the showers or were there other teachers sometimes?
But I agree with Coyote, it is ridiculous to take showers in shorts or swimsuit. I have seen this change over the years. Back until the seventies or 80's everyone took showers nude at the public swimming pools I attended, but after that boys especially began to start showering in their swimsuits.

I have heard about nude swimming, especially in the US and i am thankful I didn't have to do that; the showers were bad enough!
It was just the PE teachers who saw me nude - and classmates of course! The teachers used to tick your name off as you came out of the showers, so there was no escape.
Is there much of it goes on now? Wondering if there is anyone currently in school or teaching PE where showers are still enforced. I have heard that it is not common now, as it once was.
One of the things I rememeber is when we had a boy come from another school where they didn't have to shower, I think it was in the 4th year and he was really upset when he was made to shower! I think like all of us though he did get used to it eventually. He had no choice really!

And how did you play team ball games? How did you divide teams outdoors (shirts vs skins?) and indoors?
Was there any lessons which were co-ed? Were you barechested for that too? What did the girls wear for PE?

Boys at my secondary school were compelled by school rules to shower naked after sports and PE.
The first time in year 8 was pretty confronting.
We all knew it was coming and we spoke about it and all dreaded it. We were all a lot staider about nudity in those days, that is late 60s. It was considered embarrassing to be seen in your underpants back then, never mind naked.
On the first day of Pe I tried to get out of going by pretending to be sick, but it didn't work. A few of the boys managed not to be there,so I suppose they had more gullible mothers.
It didn't do them any good in the end, because they couldn't fake it forever, and eventually had to grit their teeth and strip.
That first time was the worst. We were all shy about it. We tried to make light of it but it was not much use.
The worst part for me was the PE teacher who was there in the changeroom and showers the whole time. He was so big and imposing, and he frightened me,and I felt so small and insignificant, skinny little thing that I was. He was looking at us all up and down as we showered in our birthday suits, saying how we looked like little skinned rabbits, and he'd have to liven us up and make men out of us.
As time went on,I got more adapted to it and it didn't bother us too much, but none of us liked it.
Lo and behold,in my senior year there, the rules were changed and boys could elect not to shower if they didn't want to.
A lot of the guys were annoyed about that. We figured if we had had to do it so should all the little grubs following us.
I heard some years later that compulsory showers were being re-considered due to hygeine issues, but I don't know waht became of it.
Personally,I think that the kids should have to shower, but in privacy. Why can't they have cubicles and at least a curtain?

No other team ball games ecept for football and rugby - cricket in summer.
We just went in teams picked by the teacher.
No co-ed lessons!
BTW coyote - maybe when I said pants you thought I meant trousers! I meant underpants. I was shy about being completely nude in public and thought I could get away with it, but the teacher made it clear that showers had to be taken naked.
PE would be first two periods on Monday and Wednesday. Certainly in the 1st year, I remember the dread the night before. Like Gandalf, first time was the worst and I also remember in primary school we would avoid our underpants being seen! Also, I had pubic hair before all my classmates and was upset at being "different" to the others. This added to the culture shock.

I know that a lot of schools have now stopped the use of showers or are optional with more privacy this is a sdvancement and it is long over due.

Strip off, stand up straight, shoulders back, stomach in, chest out, head up, and walk confidently naked to your school showers. It works.
You have stalls. Lucky. Most boys in England had and have to use a communal set up grouped together, which if you value privacy is a problem.
It probably is legal to enforce a naked showers rule. The rest is not.
Accept you have to shower naked, but do not accept crass comments from a gym teacher and report his comments to the appropriate person. Even if they are a jest, they are not tasteful.
Becoming a showers avoider tends to make things worse in my opinion.
Take your showers, be proud of your body, and take no nonsense from a daft gym teacher.

I had naked showers after PE, no stalls, and you know what? It didn't hurt.
So someone else sees your pee-pee or your bum-bum. Big deal. Grow up.
And not taking showers after PE is disgusting.

Hello there Unknown. If you don't want to be naked then you should not be made to. Legally I am unsure how it stands, and it is an interesting point you make for a 13 year old. I went to a school where boys and girls had to do this. I hated it. I resented it. But that was me and if some of my friends wanted to shower then I didn't mind, but I wanted a choice. How outrageous is it to be told you must be naked for a wash. For one, an all over flannel wash can be just as effective, if you are okay standing at a sink in your underpants/boxer shorts doing so. Would that be okay, or still too undressed?
Towel whipping seems a very boys thing. Why do they do it?
As for your teacher, his comment is hard to judge without hearing how he said it, but it reads a bit creepy and sinister. If he really has said those words, then report him, and if he was overheard by others get them onside too, so that it is not just your word against his.
Good luck.

Hello Bob, well reading that made you sound exactly like one of my own PE teachers and how I heard them speak to shy girls when I was around 13 or so. That was not a greatly sympathetic answer. To be told you are the same as everyone else is missing the point. Plus it's a cliche, and not even that true.
My brother told me they were even stricter and less tolerant of shy boys in his year who avoided this after games ritual.
A bit of empathy never hurts.
