Katie, artists almost never showed the women with pubic hair in their paintings. In fact most paintings of nude females do not even show their slits, just something blanc. Art is not supposed to be vulgar. In fact even most male nudes in old art are nearly always shown with small genitals.
As a matter of fact women never shaved their pubic hair in old days in general. In fact if you see old photos of nude women, unless they are brushed over, they are always shown with full pubic hair.

If you google it you will note that the females appearing to be mature do not have them and I thought of that when you queried about the oil paintings and shaving tools of bygone era.

To Sir Arthur hello i should think so art should not be vulger after all art is not pornography.When i was at my old school the H.S.A i had to paint and draw nude models both male and female and that was in the first year at the H.S.A.You are right the vaginal lips were never shown but the pussy bulge can be seen on some paintings along with what seems like a faint rash.Sir Arthur the first women to shave their pubic hair were the acient Eygptians followed by the acient Hindus.Wealthy roman women would have their pubic hair plucked.In days gone bye very few of the few of women did shave their pubic hair i think it was a social status sort of thing.You are right old pornographic photographs always show pubic hair.Well without a safty razor shaving ones pubic hair would be difficult if not dangerous you could end up with a case of self inflicted FGM.

To Coyote thank you for the information on the Yawalapiti i will check that out.In Europe Scandanavian women have the least pubic hair and British and Irish women the most Coyote i think this is gong to become a good topic after all we are all adults.

I have also noticed this in photos and documentaries about African tribes. Neither the men nor the women seem to have any pubic hair at all. They either shave it or are hairless by nature, the latter being more likely. In fact the adult males don't even have hair on their face. Some races are naturally hairless, except on their head of course. I have also noticed this with the Amazon tribes, where both men and women seem to have very little pubic hair if any at all. In fact I doubt if any of the males in these races, both African and Indian and some others, can grow a beard at all. Asians are also less hairy. I think the white race is the most hairy race in general.

To Sir Arthur hello yes some races are hairy than others.No amerindian male has facial hair even the Eskimos have no facial hair.African women have very little pubic hair due to the fact that they live in a hot climate.Pubic hair on a woman is belived to trap a natural scent to make her more sexual to the male how ever periods and a hot climate no not mix hence the lack of pubic hair on african women.This also goes for other body hair.Yes you are right Sir Arthur some amazonian women do not have pubic hair this again is due to a hot steamy climate.Yes i would agree with you that the white race is the most hairy in general.
