Does it bother anyone else that our educational system hasn't fundamentally changed much at all since the 1800's despite all we now know about how people learn and how our current system hinders it? For example, a student may be a prodigy at creative writing or art but be borderline inept at mathematics, as a result, his overall average decreases and he may not be able to go to university and a potential prodigy will be lost to the winds of manual labour or worse. The system is almost designed as a filter to let only specific mindsets through.

I disagree, even Albert Einstein was a horrible math student and often failed the subject, he later found a way to better understand it by applying it to areas which he had interest in, as soon as he discovered his love for physics.

To quote a Facebook meme, if we judge a fish by the ability to climb a tree, they will spend their whole lives believing they are stupid, but they are excellent swimmers.

I agree to a certain extent. I believe that the core subjects like math and science are taught because they are always required for schooling in high school and in college, and so schools need to teach basics in these classes to prepare students for what they will learn later. I don't think that enough emphasis is placed on the creative side of learning. I think that students like different things.

I am now an advertising major and there were no previous subjects in school that would even compare to what I am learning in college. Students don't have enough applicable real world skills taught to them. When I got to college I had freedom of choice to pick whatever I wanted to do. A lot was self taught like photoshop and how to use different types of technology.

If students were able to have more freedom of choice elective wise to find out what their true passion is whether it is culinary, advertising, marketing, teaching they would be more productive citizens who have been exposed to enough things to have a better idea of what they can do and what they like.
