"That will be good for our students," said Sidqe. "I have students who get to their senior year and they don't know they have to take the SAT." She said she meets with students who have taken the proper courses to enroll at UC but they haven't taken the exam.
Who is to blame here, the students as Sidge implys or the people in charge who should make sure the students have the correct and complete information.

This woman actually admitted to the fact that there are Seniors at her school who don't know they need to take the SATs?

She and/or others at the school need to be fired.

If the public institution of University of California is not for Californians FIRST, then we are truly stupid.

SAT's are the dumbest thing the school system has come up with. You go to high school for four years, you get grades, you learn and then have an "off" day and boom, your education is worthless. Testing and more testing is profit for whom? Listen up, what you have learned is there. One test proves nothing. What is the matter with this country? Revolt against this fixed nonsense. Your college entrance should be based on the entire four years of schooling, not one stupid test of memorizing.

BOO HOO.

If your a senior in high school and you lack the initiative to figure out what needs to be done in order to get to where your going, you would not survive to the second semester.

Said with much sarcasm: Is the counsler implying that CSU is not as good as UC? Are they not both 4 year institutions? Are the not both WASC accredited?

Oh and don't let the students know about the other 5,000 universities in the US.

Students just remember to give up and quit if UC does not let you in.(Rolls eyes and sighs)

Wow, something is really wrong at the school if a single student doesn't know you need to take an SAT or an ACT to get into a U.C.
As for weighted GPA's, a lot of private universities don't accept them, and will not give credit for Advanced Placement classes students take in high school. On that note, I think the U.C. system really has to get with the rest of the world.
And in regards to the cutting the percentage of top students admitted, what on earth are they thinking the U.C. system should be looking at ways to admit more students, not ways to exclude the.

I hate to say it. But any student that wants to get into a University of California campus had better be on top of it before their senior year. To say that they "didn't know" will simply mean that they were likely not prepared enough. Didn't they bother to get a campus application or catalog that has all the admissions requirements. Almost all universities require SAT's or ACT's.

Given the bureaucracy needed to survive in a University...and Mom?Dad/Counsellors won't be there to hand hold...let me tell you that any student who is not Self-Motivated will drop out after the first year.

There are several opportunities to take the SAT in the senior year (or late junior year) some people do take it two or even three times to deal with the issue of an "off-day". Others retake the test simply because they find that it takes the "stress edge" off of the testing environment, or they've seen similar questions and are better prepared, or they finally decided to take the test seriously (which many students don't thinking it will be like some they are given in their classrooms).

And for any student that "forgets" that they need to take the SAT..hey, there's community college. And you can reapply from there after your knuckleheaded mistake. If you get in after showing that you are competant at getting A's in a JC environment and do well on the SAT...hey you'll be into the UC system. Then you have to demonstrate the responsibility necessary to actually GRADUATE.

UC can make it easier for some students to get in but they still will have to compete with students that are all in the top 20% or higher. Screw-offs who were able to get an easy A in highschool while putting in minimal effort will realize that getting C's against the devoted, hardworking students is "hard". Yes all those A and B-level students are now going to be the ones professors give F's, D's, C's (average at the UC), B's and A's (top 10% of the top 20% of HS students).

Being a B or C student at a UC school shouldn't be a disgrace...but lot's of students are not even prepared for that and get A and B averages in some HS's.

Is the idea to collect more out-of-state/foreign student fees? Aren't California's schools to some degree for California residents? If students don't know they have to take the SAT, maybe the college counselor isn't doing her job.

Oh wow what a grim outlook for HS seniors.....<insert sarcasm>

Give me a break!!! Attend a JC or a CSU, you will pay much less and actually be taught directly by the Professor VS a harried grad student. Save the UC system for after the Bachelor's degree when you want to go on to graduate or professional school. If you are intent on attending a UC as an undergad, do not forget you can transfer at any time!!!

What a biased and incomplete article. Bleh..

"The idea worries Shelia Sidqe, a college counselor at Sacramento's Hiram Johnson High School."

"I have students who get to their senior year and they don't know they have to take the SAT."

This woman is a "college counselor" and then admits that there are students who don't know they have to take an SAT test? What the hell does this woman do at work all day. Making these kids aware of things like this is her job. And i wonder what is going to happen to those 8.5 percent of reserved seats that are going away, for high school seniors? They should have dug a little deeper for that little piece of info.

Every student should know before starting high school what is required to go onto trade school, JC, CSU and UC. They also should be given information about jobs if they drop out of high school or don't pursue higher education after high school.

Counselors and their bosses and guardians should be fired if students don't know that SAT's are required.

SAT's are really a poor indication of a student's ability to do well in school and in life. They also don't measure a student's capabilites and achievements well.

Stop making everything in your coverage about race and income. Many poor minorities have done quite well despite the hand they were dealt. Likewise, many affluent non-minorities have done poorly despite the hand they were dealt.

More spots, not fewer, in the UC, CSU and JC systems should be guaranteed to California high school graduates.

12.5% to 4%, still not good enough. How about 0 to 2%? Fewer snotty UC grads making me feel like a loser.

Thats correct he never lost his virginia because Molly is Hermaphrodite. At his Lower Merrion High School he was allowed to wear swimming trunks while the other boys swam nude in front of the girls and female swim coach to gain UC admission.

Lol. More gratuitous nudity from the Closeted Caped Crusader Against Nudity, from he who says he "campaigns" for the universal protection of the privacy of people's private parts (and chests, bellies, backs, and legs). He combs the web obsessively for bare asses to post for his fans because the only one he's ever touched is his own. And I can see from other posts here that DJ's fans include a boy lover from Canada and a closeted gay man from the US. It's their common attraction to bare-bottomed boys that bonds these three here. They deserve each other.
