My comment is not based on any political view, I do not care about church and state, I do not care about Democrat or Republican, it is only based on the view of a mom who pays school taxes in my town! Please, not hate mail as I have seen posted.

I believe tax payer money can be better spent. At first I was thinking maybe it was a good idea and in some cases it still may be. I wish I could afford private school for my kids and take them out of our public schools but I cannot.

Use that money to keep teachers up to date on their education. Use it to educate administration about policy and how to handle their positions. Use it to place better special education practices in the schools. The school system fails so many children because they get special education, test out of their IEP and get put back into the classroom. Then, still in need of that extra help they fall behind and get "left behind."

Use it to train, what they call 'nurses' in the schools better. My son sat in class for 4 hours with a broken arm after he fell off a piece of playground equipment. I didn't get a call, the "nurse" said nothing was wrong and gave him an ice pack and sent him back to school. At dinner I saw him protecting his arm, he told me what happened, I took him to the ER and he walked out with a cast for a broken arm. That was last year, this year he got a 4 inch cut on the inside of his wrist from a fork and they put a band aide on it, he ended up with 25-30 stitches! Again, NO call from the 'nurse' or anyone in the school.

Have any of you been to your child's school for lunch lately? I have, one day they got a shriveled up 'chicken patty' and an orange slice with raw carrots. Another day they got about 1/2 cup of spaghetti, 5 green beans and 8 grapes! That is not a meal, that is a snack for a very small puppy. Put that money towards better food and larger portions!

You will say talk to administration, the school board; I have! Nothing happens, too much red tape. Our principle is an ex-fireman, he got the job because of who he knows on the board.

Education doesn't stop nor does it start with the teachers. Parents, teachers, administration...everyone is responsible for the future and that includes the education of our children; they are our future, right?

Oh, golly. THANK YOU. Twice now I've had to scroll to the top of the screen to see that, yes, I really am still in a topic called "Thoughts on Stossel" and not "A Small Group of People Slinging Mud Back and Forth".

Sheesh.

I don't know even know the woman you are talking about, I just know what your hatred does to a person because I have been through it.

Speechless? Looks to me like they got sick of talking to a wall. They got sick of trying to defend themselves to people who are ignorant and play into gossip. They, like me, are sick of your pointing and accusations.

they are also abiding by the "Top Mod's" request to stay on topic, why don't you now?

Sounds like someone hit a nerve! If you don't know the woman, then how do you know it's gossip and not gospel truth? I think you are just a little bit closer to the subject than Mo. and you feel the heat. I don't blame you at all "Constance". I'd defend a friend too; but truth is truth and a person should admit to their wrongdoings.
Now back to the topic----STUPID IN AMERICA!

If Mayor Lew Barletta and the town of Hazleton, Pa. lose this "illegal immigration" case in court, then we are all STUPID IN AMERICA for letting it get to this point. If the Federal Government is responsibile for dealing with the illegal immigration problem, then they are NOT doing their job and heads should roll. No town should have to defend itself against a problem that the Federal Government should have under control.
The ACLU and Hispanic community would have us believe that Mayor Barletta is against all Hispanics; which is miles from the truth. He is against ILLEGALS of any nationality; and as Americans, we should be too! If you want this country to be your home, come in the door legally and you have no problem.
Many years ago most of our ancestors did that very thing. They came through Ellis Island and applied for citizenship. They have, for the most part, been productive citizens, hard workers and law abiding. None of them came for a free ride and they earned their place in America with their blood, sweat and tears. They have pride in their country and they served in many wars to protect this country. God Bless them All!!!!

Mr. Mark,
When was it that you last paid for child care. My wife and I are both high school teachers in rural Georgia (GA is in the 50th percentile when it come to educators pay). We have two young boys that are in day care and it costs us about $1200.00 a month to keep them there(about a third of my gross income per month). The break down on child care, in the area we live, comes to about $7.50 per hour per child. Let's say I give the parents of the children I care for a big break and I only charge $5.00 per hour.(5 x 25)=125,(125x5)=625,(625x180)= 112,500
(rate of pay X students per class),(rate of pay per period X periods per day),(rate of pay per day X 180 days per year)=$112,500. Almost 3X what I make as a teacher with 10 years in the classroom, two masters degrees, and coaching two sports.

How dare you say that I am over paid. Just who do you think you are.

Teachers are the most overpaid baby sitters in the history of human kind. The money is awesome for the hours, but the real pay is incalculable for a true teacher, but that teacher is so rare. I have yet to see one in person, but I know of many throughout history. This subject is so clearly misunderstood by the vast majority. mark

<quoted text>
Dear Mr. Jason, You forgot to calculate into your equation what your pimp gets paid. I am impressed that you have 2 masters degrees and good for you for coaching. I am sure you and your wife are excellent people and your children are lucky to have two parents who are teachers, especially ones that care as much as you seem to.
I dare to say what I say because I am informed in a way that very few teachers are. If you are teaching state standards, if your students sit quietly in rows, if you prepare your students for a standardized state test, you do little more than indoctrination, and for that, I can't see how a teacher that does this to children can sleep at night. If, on the other hand, you have a true understanding of what education is, you cultivate relationships with students that inspire the spirit of inquiry backed up by naturally occurring critical thinking skills, evaluated in an open ended dialogue, than my generalization definitely does not apply to you.
To tell you honestly Jason, I know who I am, the real problem, is that most teachers don’t know who they are, and they do not know what their true responsibility is to lead students forward in the spirit of intellectual development. This is a rare entity in today’s world. Most teachers have know idea how useless the information they are trying to force feed children is. In hind sight, the teaching profession will be seen as committing a crime against humanity, for now, the status quo will be maintained at the expense of our most precious resource. Remain indignant or find some humility and make the difference you were born to make.
I would be happy to discuss this with you in more amicable terms, it is obvious that you have a conscience. Good luck, Mark.

Dear all,
I realize that this line of discussion has gone largely cold, but I thought you might be interested to know that--although by a pretty slim margin not yet officially verified--it appears that Patriot's Voice member and co-founder Evy Lysk has lost her bid for a second term as school board director in Benton Pennsylvania. As someone who has been a longstanding critic of the Patriot's Voice as well as a target of their ongoing penchant for character assasination, I can tell you--and back it up with a wealth of evidence--that if ever there existed a hate group disguised as a "tax-reduction advocasy" group, it's the PV. Ms. Lysk is indeed a regional repesentative for the patently anti-Semitic Stop the ACLU, and I have been a target of some of the most vile hate-email from both Lysk and Nedd Karieva. The Patriot's Voice had, until very recently, what they called an "open" forum--much like this one--on their website, but even a casual tour of it shows that it's primary--indeed almost only--use was as a vehicle for the smearing of their opponents (that is, anyone who was for education). I reported them to their server for libel who gave them 24 hours to correct the problem (remove the libelous content), and instead of deleting it, the site administrator PV-Robert Runyon shut the forum down.
What's important here, however, is that as I read through most of these comments, it was very refreshing to see reason win out over suspicion, bigotry, and paranoia. The PV are self-styled martyrs whose aims have nothing to do with education, and everythhing to do with a kind of hellfire and brimstone indoctrination following a messy combination ideology of Joseph McCarthy and the far right's Christian Identity Movement.
In any case, I thought you might well appreciate this update. NO PV members of the several who ran for school board seats won their seats, and I'd like to think that--just like in this discussion--the voters allowed their reason to dictate thier choices--and that they wanted to set a good example for children--very much unlike the Patriot's Voice--whose example of trying to establish book banning, condemnation of the U.N., and some of the most vicious gay-bashing I have ever seen finally lost them the day.Hurrah for the voters!

John Stossel is a very politically incorrect idiot who's comments border on racism and bigotry. He makes blanket statements about poor people as if they are all lazy and worthless and bases his opinions on assumptions about statics instead of actually analyzing the stats that he skews. He thinks people on disability are all lazy and doesn't consider FACTS that these people are certified as disabled by doctors, therapists, and even psychologists and psychotherapist, there are stern set rules in order to be considered as disabled. But he treats it like they are all faking. Also he assumes that everyone can work and that there are lots of jobs to be had but he doesn't consider that not everyone is suited for all jobs. Also not all jobs pay enough and people lose benefits such as welfare just to make a pay check that would be lower than the cost of their living expenses. I believe in a strong work ethic too but Stossel is so far removed mentally from reality he is bat shit crazy. Some of his comments on global poverty can be considered racists as he calls some African impoverished people and governments names and accuses them of having sticky fingers when it comes to aid. This man not only needs to be stopped but he needs to be sued for his biased, bigoted, and slanderous comments about people based on nothing more than his elementary school understanding of statistics. He needs to learn to be more scientific in his thinking instead of emotionally vomiting on the world. I'm surprised that someone hasn't pressed racist and/or bigoted law suits again John Stossel. I'm not saying he has no first amendment rights to his free speech but when he spews nothing but filth, garbage, gibberish, and HATE then it is technically a politically incorrect hate crime he is committing.

You're right. He works for FOX News, so none of this should surprise anyone.

MaltaMon is right on the money. The Reich Wing is out to destroy the public school system in the US with their NCLB, their support for charter schools and home schooling. Stossel is nothing but a shill for Murdock and his fellow fascists.
